We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiana Lane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kiana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I definitely wish I had started pursuing music sooner. I know we’re not supposed to have regrets but that’s one of my biggest ones. I’ve been singing since I was little, like 6 or 7, and I’ve always loved writing but I didn’t put both of those things together until a few years ago when I wrote my first song. It was about a boy, naturally. I had just left college where I went to study music and I had a friend at the time who produced his own beats so I decided it was just now or never. If I had started sooner I’d definitely be a lot better at my craft, that’s for sure & I would probably have a few instruments mastered. If I had started like, in high school maybe, I’d have a bigger catalog and probably be further along in my career, but that’s what this era of my life is about.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Nice to meet you, I’m Kiana & I’m a singer from Georgia but I currently live in Colorado! I touched on this briefly in the last question but I’ve always loved singing and writing and I’m obsessed with music. Not just my own, but in general. I’ve always journaled about my feelings too, but I think I was 20 or 21 when I wrote my first OFFICIAL song because I had a major crush on this guy I knew growing up. At the time, I didn’t really know how to articulate my feelings about him because of course I’m not just going to tell him I like him! So I started listening to some beats and the words kind of just poured out. Lately, I’ve been focused on honing my craft and making really honest and vulnerable music because I feel like that’s what sets me apart from my competitors. I’m proud of the fact that I haven’t given up and I want everyone to know that I’m just getting started.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! I hate working and I want to be able to make a living and thrive simply from making music. I’ve seen others do it so I know it’s not impossible.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My favorite artists and their songs have narrated so many moments of my life both good & bad, and I want to be that artist for others. Whether that’s a song for you to cry to when you’re experiencing deep emotion or have a crush on someone and you’re falling in love, or even non romantic songs, I think people being able to resonate with the words that I write and find some comfort in them is one of the best parts about what I do. One of my songs came on in the car with a friend recently and it was such a surreal experience!
