We recently connected with Kian Meadon and have shared our conversation below.
Kian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Being a professional athlete means you will always need to find out where home is. By this, I mean that you can get drafted, traded, or relocated to a new club or travel after an opportunity at any given time. One of the biggest risks I’ve taken in my young career was relocating abroad from home (South Africa). At the age of 18, I left home (Cape Town) to move to the east coast of my country. There I became fully independent, and not long after my move, I signed my second pro contract across the seas in the United States. For me, it is all about pursuing my dream and fulfilling the goals that I set out as a kid.
It is nearly impossible to predict your future in this game but at the end of the day, you’ll feel whether you’re on the right path or not. It is not always easy being far away from family, friends, and everything you know, but sometimes this sacrifice is truly worth it. I truly feel that these uncomfortable decisions turn out to be the most beautiful chapters of your life. As the saying goes: High risk, high reward.

Kian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kian Meadon, Recently turned 22. I am one of the youngest players in Major League Rugby and I am not here to just compete. I was born & raised in South Africa by 2 lovely parents and a brother. I have dedicated over 16 years of my life to the game of rugby. I have big dreams and goals set out for the short and long term and will do anything to reach them. I currently form part of Houston’s own MLR team. Our facilities and Stadium are based in Pearland where I spend most of my day.
Although I am still young in age I feel that I mature a lot quicker because I’m in contact with fully grown adults every day. Whether it’s between the lines or outside it. This forces me to grow in different aspects daily that I would have only discovered later on in my life. In my off time, I am an angler, graphic designer as well as a coach. I recently found my love for business and will hopefully start building toward that part of my life too.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Promoting and supporting are definitely the main goals as we speak. The game of rugby is growing exponentially In the US And we want Houston to be the leader of this growth. Quoted from my director of rugby at The Houston Sabercats, “The United States are the sleeping giants” this clearly tells us that there is a bright future for the game hence the reason why I relocated at a young age. We have extremely loyal and supportive fans and we aim to grow those numbers every season. So if you haven’t checked out some of our games, 2023 is your year. We as players love to meet y’all and implemented a meet-and-greet after every single game right on the pitch where we played. We love our fans and will continue to put in the effort to connect with them too.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is one of the greatest tools that you can have as a creator, artist, athlete, or businessman. I was fortunate to receive a lot of growth throughout my time as a player. The best advice I can give to you is to create content specific to what you do. You have to create and post content very specific to your niche. That might mean that you will have to sacrifice your personal posts to stick to what your following would like to see. Make sure that your profile always looks professional and well thought through. Lastly, stick to the same theme with your posts, use the same filters or color schemes, and don’t change it because it will throw your feed off balance. If your profile as well as your feed looks pleasing to the eye, you will instantly pick up a following. The next job should be to keep them interested. Don’t be scared to show your face and ask questions specific to your niche. Find viral trending videos and recreate them with your own personal touch. If you do all this you are definitely set up for success.
