Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kia Kamellia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kia, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I like to think that I don’t live with many regrets in life. I really believe in the philosophy that everything happens for a reason! I actually was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and moved to Louisville, Kentucky around 2012. Naturally as a kid I was always moving around, dancing, singing, wanting to be involved in my mom’s camcorder, having interest in cheer, drama etc,. I have always been passionate about the arts and was inspired by much of the music I listened to growing up through my Mom and Nana, and the sitcoms I watched. I loved how they could tell stories, and create music that would speak to so many people across generations. I knew I wanted to do that.
I made comedy skits, and short plays with my brothers and cousins. I had a really huge imagination then! I first started making videos when I was in middle school about 6th or 7th grade. I was gifted my first digital camera, and started out with Windows Movie Maker, then Video Pad Editor (good times). I was pretty much self taught. I would learn from the world around me, clubs/activities I was involved in, and mostly from other wonderful fellow youtubers who would teach editing through their channels. My family always encouraged me, so I am always thankful of that.
I think looking back, I was not ready to be determined, and persistent with my channel. I was navigating life, and I would not have been ready. I had a YouTube channel for years, but feel truly destined and motivated to fully give everything to it now. All the balancing, and things I’ve went though has put me in a position to feel completely empowered and invested with my channel, and self. It’s like finally having all the ingredients for a perfect sauce! So in theory, I would not have changed anything. I would have started at the same time. God has put me in this position for a reason. I’ve only gotten better through the years and I’m excited to see what else will align for my future!
Kia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello there! My name is Kia Kamellia! I am a content creator, artist, and videographer. I have been posting seriously on my channel since the end of last year. I’m so excited to share even more projects, and content with you all this year!
I started learning to make and edit videos in middle school and was inspired from watching MTV, VH1 music videos, Nick, or Disney Channel Original Movies.
The focus on my channel is just about anything’s artsy – I create hair, makeup, fashion videos, travel vlogs, DIY videos, product reviews, and such. I also create music as well!! I think something that sets me apart from other content creators, or influencers would be the fact that I am authentic in myself, multifaceted, and will always keep it real with my supporters. My channel is not to sell you things, but instead be a familiar Louisville face and personality that will give you first look insights, tips, humor, education, and of course art. I really want to foster content that start conversations, creates community, connections, and that will inspire others. My goal is really just to be able to make that table for myself, and to be able invite others to the table. I want to be a voice for people that are like-minded and might not have the opportunity to ever express themselves. And I think whenever you come to my channel you’re going to find a video that you’ll like, learn from, or that will leave you with good vibes!
I want all potential subscribers to know that I plan on continuing to create content that will open conversations, while always being me. I am also releasing music later on this year so I am excited to explore that avenue of myself, and to see how people will receive it! I have been writing for years so this will be another side of me for people to see, and hear. My music sound will be R&B, flares of hip hop/rap, dance – pop, and some afro beats.
I post weekly on my channel on Fridays! I hope to see you all along this journey!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I love this question!
Art is such an impactful thing. We see how influential certain fashion, films, artists, books, music, designs, paintings, etc., have been. It’s so crucial to support fellow artist, and the ones in your city. As a society, it’s important for us to as to be the change that we want to see. With all the craziness that’s happening in the world, it’s never been as important as it is right now to make sure that you are patronizing businesses that deserve your dollars and support! I heavily believe that sentiment extends to entertainers, artist, creatives, (influencers too). Start supporting your local creatives, and artist in your area that you see doing nice work, and are good willed. Be apart of that! Start shopping, and researching your local businesses, women-owned, and especially Black and brown owed- businesses!
Change starts with you believing, and then others believing. I am firm believer in trying to support your locals! It’s not always about buying-you can share a post with friends, like/love, leave a comment, support an event, turn on notifications etc.,. It all means support, and will go full circle! It truly means a lot!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I think something I had to unlearn is just understanding that as great as it is to be dedicated to a career, job, or space, you also have to bet on yourself at the end of the day. You have to have a healthy balance in life as much as you can. Sometimes people and/or entities are staking on you never being committed to yourself so that you’ll always be committed to them. I learned you have to get to a point to not feel guilty for investing in yourself all the way. I implore people to invest in self- mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, financially, and everything else.
I just came to the realization over the years that if you don’t tell your story… someone might tell it for you one day. I just have so much to share and give, and why shouldn’t I bet on myself?
