We were lucky to catch up with Khyln Elam recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Khyln, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you find your key vendor or vendors? Maybe you can share the backstory and share some context and the relevant details to help us understand why you chose them, why they chose you, etc.
Walmart reached out to our business in the beginning of 2021. Shortly after all the requirements had been met to move forward in getting products in the stores and online I (Khyln’s Mom) became pregnant. Walmart wanted a mass production of 5000 of each product or the products of your choice. Due to extreme hyperemisis I was unable to meet that goal. Then a few months later I was put on bedrest for 4 months until the baby’s due date. Although this is a tough task without being pregnant I previously set a date to start working on the mass production. My goal was to only mass produce the Uchel and do 250 Uchel’s per day which is our hair growth oil. I was committed to doing this for a little over 2 & 1/2 weeks to meet a 3 week goal. I literally had it all figured out and vendor for bottles on board. The good news is the offer is still available. I’m just working on getting back into the swing of things now that the baby is here and I’ve been cleared from my 8 week Postpartum bedrest. We are committed to accomplishing this goal within the next 6mon.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Khy’s Growth Refinement specializes in the healthiness of hair by creating handmade healthy rejuvenating products. Khy’s Growth Refinement is formulated to have a light consistency while hydrating hair follicles without clogging your pores. The 3 step treatment can be used alone or with a full routine. The multi-purpose hair replenishing oil can be used on hair, lashes, and eyebrows! Our handmade products are infused with aloe vera, black seed, herbal green tea and essential oils and can be used on male, female, and babies.
What we are most proud of is that we can help people who suffer from breakage, brittle hair, dry hair, stunted growth, balding, receding hairline, thinning hair, pregnancy hair loss and babies who suffer from cradle cap. There are not many products in the black community that aim for the healthiness of hair and we are most proud that we are an asset to those who suffer from those common hair issues. What sets us apart from others is no other company uses our ingredients and no other company has what we have.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner is my daughter Khyln Elam. She is actually the CEO. Most people think her name and picture is just used but the business is her parents business. That is a huge misconception. This is her legal business registered through the State of Georgia along with her own business account. This business was our gift to her for her 8th birthday during the height of the Covid pandemic. Gifting Khyln this LLC was a dream come true since she has always wanted to be a business owner. Everything and everyone was on lockdown so this was the perfect time to make this happen.
We work really well together and this is a quick overview of how we operate. I prepare products. I manage production of products. Khyln does inventory and pulls orders. I manage labels & vendors for our containers and I oversee packaging and shipping with the help of my Mom and husband.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During my pregnancy I (Khyln’s Mom) had the excuse and option to give up and take the back seat to this particular business but I know people were depending on this product. Our customers don’t support Khy’s Growth Refinement they actually NEED the products. It is a necessity for them and that alone pushed me to continue to work throughout my bedrest. However, I did have to find the best way to make that possible without over working and that was to cease all marketing, posting on social media, advertising, and to remove bill boards throughout the city. This strategy allowed business to slow down to a point where I could manage my repeat customers. I was able to focus on their products monthly without becoming to overwhelmed. I’ve always had the help of my Husband, Mom, and Daughter but this decision had to be made so that those customers didn’t suffer through my lack of availability.
