We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khyati Kapur a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Khyati, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
We are an immigrant family from India who came to the United States over 35 years ago. My parents both grew up underprivileged and education was a luxury, not a necessity. My grandfather was a principal of a school. He ensured that his sons received proper education, knowing this would be an investment for their future. My father made it his priority to achieve advanced education he needed to become an engineer and to build a reputable career path and worked for Otis Elevators in India. Both my parents worked very hard to achieve success Together, they made a life to sustain a future for both themselves, as well as their children and our future generations. But something ached in my parents. They had worked so hard for success and knew that education was a staple for this. They wanted to provide this for their children as well. So, they decided to leave everything they had built in India and move to America. They left their home, jobs, and immediate family and took a risk to come over here with no financial backing or support. They made this sacrifice to provide greater opportunities for their children and their future generations.
While this risk was scary and definitely had no guarantees, my parent’s perseverance is really what pulled us through. They both worked multiple jobs to support us and then decided that they wanted to further their education in the United States so they could have better job opportunities. Their goal was simple: better education meant better opportunities for them and us. They sacrificed everything because they knew it would ultimately benefit my brother and I. There is no amount of gratitude that we can show them for what they did. This same perseverance has been ignited in both my brother and I. They also inspired in us to have the drive to always show up at 100%, willing to take the chance, make mistakes and learn from them to grow as a person. As a child, I didn’t understand the amount of sacrificing my parents did for my brother and me. But now at the age of 43 I understand this sacrifice more than ever. This is why I will work hard with my husband to inspire and instill the same core values in my children.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a board-certified Physician Assistant and have been practicing for over 20 years. Most my experience has been in the emergency room (and I still work there per diem), as well as and several years in the surgical setting. I have been a Wellness and Aesthetics Practitioner for over 3 years now. I have always loved the artistic aspect of aesthetics and understanding the anatomy of the aging face. I remembered my parents taking their leap of faith to pursue what they loved so much, and inspired by their determination, I finally took the leap of faith to leave the ER and start all over in a new field. I was terrified! I had just turned 40 and here I was embarking in a field that was already competitive and with much younger injectors as well as becoming one of the pioneers in developing advanced therapies for health and wellness. I stayed true to myself and paved my own creative path in everything that I do. I started first in the aesthetics, taking hands on classes, learning from the best, online modules, and much more. I then started to expand my education, knowledge and practice into hormone optimization therapy and regenerative medicine, because I truly believed that aesthetics and wellness go hand and hand. I strive to help create beauty from the inside out.
I have now been in the aesthetics and wellness industry for 3 years, and to say I have a passion for it is an understatement! It is the best feeling to walk into my work and absolutely love my day. Yes, there are hard days and times when I am drowning but it is because I have so much invested into each and every one of my patients and their inclusive wellbeing, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I got an amazing opportunity to work at Shaman’s Leawood Total Wellness, where we offer so many integrative regenerative services such as: medical and regenerative aesthetics, microneedling/PRP treatments, hormone optimization, medical weight loss, IV therapy, and ketamine therapy. And we have more coming soon! I have been able to grow so much in this field, and I am grateful to be working with an amazing staff that constantly supports and encourages me. I wouldn’t be able to do my job without them.
When I meet a patient for the first time, I like to ask them how they found me. Their response, more often than not, is because someone referred them to me. That is the BEST compliment I can ever get professionally! I think what sets me apart from others in a similar industry, is the intense studying, education, and practice I continue to do every day and before they are ever in front of me. I genuinely listen to all their concerns, place tremendous value in their goals, and customize each and every treatment to their needs. I humbly know that I will always need to continue pursuing education and practice to continue to elevate my results. However, doing whatever it takes by striving to provide the best outcomes possible for each patient is something that enlivens me and motivates me to always give 100%.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I have always wanted to be a pastry chef! At one point in my life, I seriously thought about opening an Indian-American bakery with my mom! I have always found solace in baking and decorating, diving into the small, artistic side of me! This is a huge reason why I love medical aesthetics! I love examining the art of the face and understanding how best to enhance a person’s anatomical structure.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My patients. 100%. Their referrals to their friends and families displays to me how much they value the trust they have in my care. I have patients that drive hours to see me and I am so grateful for them and all of my patients. There are so many wonderful and knowledgeable providers that offer the similar services that I do, and I understand that my patients have choices as to who they see. I am proud of the reputation that I have built for myself because of my patient’s support and trust and will continue to strive to be a strong provider in this space.
