We were lucky to catch up with Khrystal Womack recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Khrystal thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I enjoy being a business owner. The opportunity to do what you want with your time is priceless. It takes a lot of discipline, time, and effort. Working a regular job will have you working forty-ish hours. Being a business owner requires a lot more.
I’ve had regular jobs in the mental health, customer service, creative, and criminal justice arenas. Unfortunately I realized as I sat at a desk looking out the window or staring at a wall that I was simply waiting for the end of the work day. Wait for the end, work these five days, spend ten hours commuting and working, like three to myself, and eight to nine hours sleeping. I just really did not want that to be my norm anymore. I wanted to have complete control of my time making things to help other people fully enjoy their time.
Being w business owner has afforded me these opportunities. Finding my own ways to fill my days is an amazing feeling.

Khrystal , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m notoriously frugal. I make a lot of my own beauty products and wanted to create something for people who thought like me. I was talking to my sisters about it and they love to maje candles and wax melts. I’m very interested in comfort and style so I created foot pillows which is a memory foam insert for high heeled shoes. They’re designed to alleviate the stress of the weight on the balls of your feet so you can wear your heels longer. My sisters loved the idea of customizing candles and wax melts for customers. Purple lemon scented candle, why not?
After some discussion, we decided to go into business together. Each offering something we’re passionate about under one umbrella, our company, Mess 2 Empress. The idea being that we’re all a mess only a short distance to an empress and we have impressive items (mess to impress). We thought it was a cute play on words.
We love being and working together to run our business.

How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
We sell on our website mess2empress.com.
We looked at a few different options before we settled on this one. We wanted something that had e-commerce options., but pretty straightforward. You’ll find that you can a website, a website with e-commerce options, marketing campaigns, etc. Or you can have a website with various plug-ins. You have to weigh the pros and cons of what your business needs and how much time, energy, and effort you want to put into creating and maintaining your website, managing, and tracking orders.
Starting out, price is obviously a factor. You just have to decide how much your time is worth snd where you want to spend it.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Within the idea of business and sales, it’s always about the bottom line and getting the most bang for your buck. It’s important to never alienate your team in the pursuit of this though.
People enjoy hearing how they’ve contributed to the overall success of a company and I think it’s important to note that even when sales have hit a lull. Always value your people.
