We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khristian “Luci” a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Khristian “Luci”, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Since a young age, risk-taking has been nothing short of a necessity for me. When it comes to being an artist? It’s definitely become a necessity. I’ve taken all kinds of risks—from leaving home at 18 years old to pouring every last penny into a project, fingers crossed, hoping it brings me even an inch closer to making my dreams come true.
Sacrifice has been the greatest teacher throughout my journey, along with all the beautiful lessons that come from taking a chance. As a creative, you have to be willing to go to the extreme—to push past what feels safe and beyond what others think is safe too.
Sometimes that means selling your drum kit, letting go of your favorite jacket, or skipping lunch or breakfast. Is this necessarily the best way to find success? No, there is never a clear path. But it will teach you what it means to wake up every day hungry to make your dreams a reality—no matter the cost.
Khristian “Luci”, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Khristian “Luci” Osuna. I’m a Costume Designer and Artist from Los Angeles, California! When it comes to all things superhero… I’m your go-to guy.
Since I was a little kid, I found comfort in capes and masks—though I had no idea just how far that passion would carry me. My inspirations come from all over: the characters I read about in comic books, the friends and family who support me, and the lessons I learn through every creative endeavor and opportunity.
Years ago, I never could’ve imagined that the hobby the nerdy kid with glasses and bad acne was so obsessed with would bring me so much fulfillment and joy. A lot of my success has come after a long trail of losses and failures—but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that every step on the path, whether good or bad, contributes to a greater whole.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
It’s easy to go with the flow when all the pieces of your puzzle feel like they’ve come together. The biggest pivot I’ve felt in my life was losing my best friend. When you have someone who feels like half of you, life can shift dramatically when that is suddenly taken away. There were countless days when burying my head in the covers and keeping my eyes closed until the sun went down just made sense.
But after some time, healing, and reflection, I learned a lot of things that gave me a new lens on life:
To Push – Push to make the loved ones we miss proud, and to honor their absence by being the most present and powerful version of ourselves.
Slow Down & Feel – It’s okay to feel and to slow down sometimes. As the amazing Andrew Garfield explains: grief is all of the unexpressed love we have for someone, and it’s okay to feel it.
Love – Finding love in each day is undeniably the key to going to sleep with a full cup. Listen to that song you like, go get that one bagel from the spot you love, or share laughs with a loved one — the keys to happiness have been jangling at our hips this whole time.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The main factor driving my creative journey centers around two key points of focus. First, my goal is to fulfill the dreams of my childhood self and prove that, with the right amount of fuel to the fire, anything is possible. However, the stronger of the two is my desire to give others the kind of experience I would’ve cherished as a kid—to help build lasting memories between families through the things we love and look up to every day: heroes.
We often underestimate the value of a well-crafted object that truly immerses us in whatever world our imagination chooses to explore. Whether it’s the details on an Omnitrix, the weight of Thor’s hammer, or the paint job on your Batarang—it all plays a role in shaping the experience. My hope is to take the feeling you get when holding these items or wearing that costume and amplify it—to show just how magical it can truly be.
