We recently connected with Khris Jorden and have shared our conversation below.
Khris, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I first began getting into music, I worked with an artist named Terry James around 2018/19. He’s still a good friend of mine to this day. I shadowed him on his journey to learn the ins and outs of the music industry. Help make concepts for music videos, album covers, learned how songs were produced and worked on. At some point I wanted to “do music” but never fully understood what it meant. a year later I talked to a few friends and some family and was convinced to at least start with beat making. My brother is a known producer/engineer in Philadelphia and kept encouraging me to just make a beat and post it. Finally after feeling super anxious and doubtful of everything. I created a beats tars account in 2019 and went for it. Of course a lot of my beats in the beginning were pure trash. But over time I started learning how to make beats people would like. More importantly I learned how to make beats I would be proud of. It took me a few months but I finally got a sale and its been a passion of mine ever since. It helped to practice my craft since the lockdown was a thing. I still worked full-time but I wanted to make my art a source of income one day. I’m glad I took the risk to start investing in my craft and more importantly, myself.
Khris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Khris, I go by Jspektre and I’m a music producer based out of Philadelphia/pa area. I’ve always had a liking for arts since I was a kid. Drawing, singing, playing instruments, I honestly just loved creating. I never thought much of it until years later once I graduated high school and met Terry James (a friend of mine that is an artist). I shadowed him throughout the process of making his album Platinum Heart and began my own Journey. I primarily specialize in making dark trap beats but I like to dabble in all genres. With my business I try to create unique anime inspired music to give people a unique sound to there music while also allowing those who follow the nerdcore scene to have access to music like there favorite artists. A few of my favorites would be VI seconds, daddphatsnaps, dizzy eight and many more. I’m really proud of the small following I’ve managed to gather and of the respect gained from regular artists I work with. I want to make money to continue funding my craft. But overall I honestly love being able to create things and I feel it separates me from most other producers who sell just to make money. I would love to make a song everyone loves over making money. I try to focus on my beatmaking and mixing services to make sure even the smallest artist gets a chance to have their dreams come true.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
One of the biggest resources, especially as a creator is the fans. You’re gonna get trolls, some people are just like that but the genuine ones will give you great feedback to help you improve. I’m an introverted person and can be a little shy sometimes but i’ve learned that once comfortable with criticism. The only way to go is up. Family and friends can good people to go to. Being challenged forces you to evolve, it forces you to get better. A lot of people get complacent and their craft gets stale. Listening to those who listen to your music can help you find better ways to create and may even give you a few ideas you never would have thought of otherwise. In hindsight I wish I had of used this ideology, I would have probably gotten further than I am now,
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I honestly want to get away from working a normal 9-5 job. Nowadays corporations are bleeding the masses dry for every penny they have and i’ve honestly had enough of it. I’ve worked retail jobs most of my life, from cashier to management and clearly most corporations could care less for those underneath them. I want to be free from that system and possibly spread some joy with my business. Making it easier for those without the skills or time to learn the skills to make beats for their songs. Music will always be a part of humanity and if I can help the next eminem or beyonce make their start. It’ll be well worth the time and effort.
