We were lucky to catch up with Khloe Cain recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Khloe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
I acquired my initial client by offering complimentary sample edits when I was just starting. To my astonishment, they remarked that my work on the manuscript seemed seasoned beyond my experience level. This led to the establishment of a professional relationship, with me eventually becoming their Chief Editor.
Khloe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
More than a decade ago, I founded my editing company due to my passion for reading and a recognition of the necessity for editors to aid authors in refining their books.
I provide authors with developmental, line, and copy editing services, and beyond that, I focus on enhancing their writing skills through my unique editing approach.
What distinguishes me from competitors is my commitment not only to ensuring a manuscript is error-free but also to facilitating the author’s learning throughout the process. Additionally, I strive to cultivate a tranquil environment when collaborating with authors.
I aim to remind writers worldwide that they possess a unique talent. Despite the challenges, they successfully wield their craft. They should take pride in every word they write, knowing it can empower others on their journey. Furthermore, I emphasize the significance of the editing process, encouraging authors to allocate a budget for it in their projects.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My robust standing in the writing industry is a result of my resilience and distinctive editing approach. I tackle each project with assurance, embracing challenges without hesitation. Word of mouth has been instrumental in expanding my business, bolstered by my consistent engagement on social media platforms.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I embarked on my editing journey, I focused solely on editing fiction books. Over time, I began to receive numerous requests for nonfiction projects. Recognizing the distinct rules governing editing in each genre, I dedicated myself to learning the nuances of nonfiction editing through books and online tutorials. To this day, I refer back to my trusted resources whenever I encounter challenges. I’ve come to understand that continuous learning is essential for refining one’s craft.
