We were lucky to catch up with Khet Waas Hutip recently and have shared our conversation below.
Khet Waas, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
It’s so many kind things that people have done for me, but I have have two instances that helped catapult my business. First is a good friend whom I consider a brother, Jeffrey ‘Uni’ Nickelson. I wanted to be certified and taught by a great Holistic Doctor by the name of Dr. Laila Afrika (praise be upon him). However, I Also wanted to open my business on Remount road, but it was going to be one or the other due to my finances. So Uni the building manager at the time told me to pay for the course and he gave the First month free. This allowed me to focus on the course and open Sacred Rootz on Remount road. At this time, I had a job and my wife was running the shop during the day while I worked. She decided that it’d be best if I quit my job and she go to work, that way I can grow in my craft and run the business. Besides, “you are the face of Sacred Rootz and the people want to see you”, she said. I am thankful for those two individuals for their selfless act of kindness and the they confidence had for me.
Khet Waas, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started out as young man who enjoyed helping others with ailments. At this point, I wasn’t selling herbs. I would just give them away as people asked, “Hey, what do you have for this or that?” I’d use them as subjects as well as myself to see what herbs worked best and what herbs didn’t work as effective. Sacred Rootz started as a business when I healed my first person of diabetes. She gave me one hundred dollars (though I refused), and told me that herbalism was my calling and that I should take it seriously. I took heed to her words and started to study plants, and the human body. I would then start to educate myself and others on how to heal themselves of various dis-eases. I have been taught by the great Dr. Laila Afrika who has written many books on holistic health and has healed thousands from a holistic approach. My goal is for Sacred Rootz to become a household name when it comes to healing. We want to empower the community with the right knowledge to heal themselves by way of proper nutrition, herbal medicine and promote self love. What I’m most proud of is seeing people of all nationalities, races, colors, genders, sexual orientation walk in our store with the mindset of wanting to live a healthy life. I believe that healing is for all and I’m obligated to help guide those who want assistance in the right direction to a better healthier lifestyle.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My sincerity, integrity, and love for people in general. They can feel the positivity when they walk in my store. I am one with the people. I myself was sick at one point, because of eating bad foods, excessive alcohol, smoking etc. So I know how both sides of the spectrum of good health and bad health is to a person. I’m relatable to the people. I constantly study so that I can relay the information in a simplistic way rather than sounding “deep” and intimidating. I was taught if you can’t teach what you know to a child, then you don’t have the wisdom nor understanding of what it is your studying, therefore not qualified to teach it. We’ve helped hundreds, thousands of people increase their quality of life by way of educating about the importance of nutrition from a holistic perspective.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I teach my students that they can have all the knowledge in the world, but if you don’t teach others with compassion and patience, no one will want to deal with you. Having compassion for your clients, having great customer service, and patience is the biggest thing you can have in my field. You must understand that the individual is coming to you with their trust and most importantly, their bodies. In holistic health, we want to deal with the “whole” being, the mental, spiritual, and physical of their being. So knowledge alone will not help them, you must have the wisdom to know observe their emotional personality, what type of learner, thinker, and listener the individual is. By observing this, you will be able to relate and better connect with the client. This form of holistic practice is needed when dealing with one who is sick. Your job is to make them whole again.
