We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Khern$. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Khern$ below.
Khern$, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
“Masterpieces are not single and solitary births; they are the outcome of many years of thinking in common, of thinking by the body of the people, so that the experience of the mass is behind the single voice.” – Virginia Woolf
What exactly do we think about when someone utters the words “Character Development”? Is it Literature?.. Hollywood?.. Video games? I believe that most of us have heard this term and we each have our own ideas and perspectives on it. In literature and Hollywood, the term is defined as “the process of fleshing out fully formed dynamic characters with well-defined personality traits and a strong point of view. Character development affects everything from a character’s name and physical attributes to their backstory and character bio.” In video games its described like “Character development may refer to: Characterization, how characters are represented and given detail in a narrative”, adding on “character arc is the change in characterization of a dynamic character over the course of a narrative”.
However for me, character development is something that transcends entertainment altogether. I believe that it goes back to ancient times, from the cradle of civilization, to this very day that we all live and breathe. It is not something that we just encounter whilst enjoying a TV series or reading a book, its the ways we grow as people and as a people. Its the reason why kids feel the need to look up to someone. Its the way someone falls in love. Its what makes us ourselves.
Which is exactly why I’m excited to announce the release of my debut solo album named “Character Development”. This project will not be a typical Khern$ experience. Everything on this project has been marinating for quite a while, its a project that expresses a bit more of a personal side of who I am as a person and why I am that way. Not only will the project come with a visual experience, but it will come with an immersive one. More than anything, this project is one that I have been developing even before I knew I was going to devote my time into being an artist.
Like Shakespeare once said “Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once.”
Khern$, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” – Oscar Wilde.
I’m an artist, I’m a businessman, I’m an intellectual, and I’m an enthusiast. My name is Khern$, I got the juice to get you loose.
I come from the San Fernando Valley, straight out of Sylmar, to be exact. I make music for people who do what they want and how they want. To be a fan of Khern$, is not so much to be a fan of me, but more so to be a fan of following your dreams.
In terms of my philosophies or disciplines, self improvement and depth of understanding are imperative to building the environment in which I have tried to excel in, not only as an artist but also as a person overall. Before I started contributing to the community of music and art, I was a fan. I’ve always loved the field I’m currently a part of. I am an enthusiast at heart and I strive to perpetuate the advancement of my passion in ways that are conducive of the type of artist I desire to be.
I have collaborated with some of the best and most creative artists in my area. I have expanded my reach and exposure through hard work and love for the game. In all honesty, I could sit here and tell you who I am and what I’m about, but in my opinion, I believe that instead of asking me, I think it would more appropriate to let my fans speak for me. If you’re reading this, then chances are you are at a 1 degree of separation from finding someone who has followed my journey in the last 2 years.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think it really comes down to 2 things.. The process and time.
I cant stress this enough. Timing is absolutely critical to everything I do as an artist. Whether its timing between songs on a project, timing between songs on a live set, timing between the release of a song, or timing in the writing. The very essence of music is the manipulation of sounds and time. With that being said, time is a double edged sword. I’ve seen many projects fail due to the amount of time spent on it. Sometimes, the less time you spend trying to perfect something, the better.
The process itself can be either easy or hard depending on your perspective and approach. I’ve come to realize that the product is a direct reflection of the process and the feeling behind any work of art. A process that may work for me may not work for others and vice versa. Finding your own process can be the most beneficial part of your journey.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe that most artists find themselves asking this very same question on a daily basis. Understanding what society can do for an artist is similar to understanding what an artist can do for society. The way I see it, both artists and society play a role of providing a service. Picture this, I as an artist can provide a piece of art (in any form) that embodies the daily struggles of providing food and shelter for my family. In turn society experiences my art and provides feedback, praise, or criticism. Technically, the work of art is not complete without the full cycle closing. We as artists put our ideas, beliefs, and souls into the work we put out.
Listen. Explore. Engage.
Most artists would say, liking and sharing on social media would help a lot, it would. Other artists would say buying merchandise would help a lot, it would. In most cases though, the sheer act of engaging is the best form of support. Remember, its not whether they say something good or bad about your work, its whether they’re talking about your work at all.
