Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Khanh Nguyen, M.a.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Khanh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
If I could go back in time, I would 110% start my resume business MUCH sooner! I launched my LLC in January of 2022 while I was (and still am) pursuing my doctorate in clinical psychology. Ever since high school, I was told that I “have a way with words.” I edited resumes for friends and peers in high school, which helped to get them their first part-time jobs in the food and retail industries. Fast forward to college – they landed internships and their first “big boy/girl jobs” upon graduation after I enhanced their resumes. Then came graduate school – I was in my second year of my five-year doctoral program in clinical and forensic psychology. I was a full-time student while also completing an unpaid externship. An old friend pushed me to finally make a profit out of my writing skills and I figured it was a good and non-time consuming way to earn some pocket money. Now, I own a five-figure resume business that has helped clients earn six-figure jobs at Fortune 500 companies and federal agencies!
While I believe that it’s never too late to start a new journey and that everyone’s timing is unique and well-aligned for them, starting sooner would have allowed me to connect with more clients and improve their career trajectories sooner. I’m sure I would have likely made more mistakes in my younger years, but starting my business venture earlier would have allowed me to learn even more, from my own mistakes and from others’ expertise.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Khanh Nguyen and I am the owner of Resume with Khanh, LLC. My business offers resume-editing services to people from all walks of life, whether they’re a recent college graduate or a seasoned employee hoping to switch to a different field for a fresh start. I started editing resumes in high school and was always told that I “have a way with words.” I watched my friends and peers get their first part-time jobs in the food and retail industries. Then, when college came around, I helped them land internships and their first “big boy/girl jobs” shortly after graduation. I launched my LLC in January of 2022 when I was (and still am) in graduate school pursuing my doctorate in clinical psychology after realizing that I can make a profit out of my writing talents.
I offer two types of resume-editing services. With the first package, I edit resumes on my own time after studying and learning about clients’ career fields and dream jobs. The second package includes collaborative Zoom meetings in which clients and I meet virtually to edit their resumes together. They are able to ask me questions and get personalized answers and tips in real time, as well as thorough explanations of my edits and suggestions. I also host resume workshops at local high schools and universities in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area.
My resume services have changed many clients’ career trajectories and lives by helping them land six-figure jobs at Fortune 500 companies and federal agencies! My clients have tripled their previous salaries and found their callings! I help my clients show up authentically and shine on their resumes, receive multiple interview offers, and earn liveable and well-deserved salaries.
I am most proud of the connections and friendships I have made with my clients. To me, they are much more than job seekers. They are people who deserve to have healthy work-life balances and to experience happiness in the workplace. Our professional and personal relationships make my business worthwhile!
I want future clients to know that they CAN have it ALL – healthy work environments, quality time with their loved ones, and good pay. I’m so grateful to have been a small part of each and every one of my client’s professional journeys.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Relationships with clients are the anchors of my business. They not only allow for referrals through word-of-mouth, but they also have turned into personal friendships of mine that I cherish dearly. I keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty by periodically checking in on them after they work with me. After a few months following resume revamps, I reach out to ask former clients about their job searches and how things have panned out for them so far. In response, clients have shared that they got so many interviews and job offers that they temporarily struggled to pick the best options. Other clients have told me that they earned significant salary increases and great work-life balances. Staying in touch and continuously building upon my client relationships have changed my business for the better.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Other than referrals from previous clients, social media has been the key to building and growing my business and clientele! Initially, my business took off through Instagram reels and trending audios. I created social media content that was both educational and relatable (work trauma is so real, right?). Two years into my business, I launched my website (www.resumewithkhanh.com) to solidify the legitimacy of my business. It’s my main source for new clients as they inquire about booking and pricing information and learn more about me as the business owner, a future clinical and forensic psychologist, and most importantly, their biggest cheerleader.
