We recently connected with Khang Nguyen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Khang, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Khang Nguyen’s paintings are rooted in various philosophical ideas and approaches that seek to provide insights into certain undisclosed domains of being, knowing and time that exceed subjective faculties. In essence, his paintings are diagrams that investigate and express the nature of primordial awareness, such as nonduality, unbounded nonlocality, trans-conceptuality, reflexive consciousness, and self-recognition.
Khang, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Khang Nguyn is a visual artist and scholar of philosophy and religion. Nguyen’s areas of research are the nondual traditions, apophatic tradition, mysticism, dialectical tradition, modern and postmodern philosophies, comparative philosophy and religion, as well as aesthetic theories. He seeks to bridge distinct traditions in order to see commonalities and from different perspectives, while at the same time recognizing their irreducible differences and particularities. The insights obtained from his investigations are integrated into his visual art and curatorial projects. Lastly, he is currently a PhD candidate. Here is his dissertation topic: Aesthetic Contemplation of the Reflexive Mirror: Abhinava Gupta’s and Martin Heidegger’s Views on Accessing Being as Such Via Aesthetic Experience
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My paintings are diagrams that seek to provide insights into certain undisclosed domains of being, knowing and time.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Some of the most important ideas for my paintings are from my study and practice of certain nondual traditions: Zen Buddhism, Nondual Shaivism, Dzogchen.
