We recently connected with Khandilyn Hicks and have shared our conversation below.
Khandilyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
As a product of the new generation of my industry, things have changed significantly since I got started back in 2012. There was a hunger for knowledge and motivation to succeed where others may have not seen the potential. As a business owner , I find it difficult to place eager professionals in my salon. We now have salon suites which has become very crippling to the salon floor homes. Everyone is more willing to be alone rather than soak up more information from other beauty pros or enjoy the comradely of the entire salon experience. I wish that would stop especially for new comers.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been in the industry for 12 years. I fell in love with the beauty industry as a child. I loved the smell of products when it was time for a salon visit. My younger sister was my first client and pretty much got annoyed every time I asked to do her hair. But hey, that’s where I got started! In my career now, I’d like to believe that I solve the issue of “what’s good for my hair?” My clients can trust that not only will they love their hair but they have a Hair prescription for their hair goals. You tie in professionalism and consistency and they’re hooked! I mainly focus of healthy hair care and natural appealing extensions. I also offer lash extensions which is a new love for me. I’m most proud of my resilience throughout my journey, I never wanted to do anything else but be a beauty pro! And I’ve done that! I’m a licensed Cosmetology educator as well so if I’m not teaching, I’m servicing or promoting my brand.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my business partner at the beginning of my career. We graduated from the same beauty school so that was the initial connection. We worked alongside each other in two salons and I always admired her ability to work hard and the respect her clients had for her work.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Referrals. Also being a walking billboard for my business. It’s not hard to tell I do something beauty related. I try my best to look the part as I full heartedly believe “when you look good, you feel good”.
