We recently connected with Kham Rembert and have shared our conversation below.
Kham, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew I wanted to pursue music professionally in the summer of 2015. I had just graduated high school and was preparing to go off to college in the fall. A couple friends and I started a group and were making music. We had the opportunity to do a few performances around my city and I remember the feeling I felt seeing that my words were impacting those we performed for especially the youth. I started to fall in love with the opportunity to make real impact through music.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kham! I’m a 25 year old Christian hiphop artist from Virginia Beach, VA. I’m also first generation Guyanese America. Music was not my first love, basketball was, but I always liked music. As a kid I would sneak and watch music video countdowns on BET and VH1. I even found an old journal from when I was 6-7 years old that had some scribbles of “songs “ I was trying to write. When I was in middle school a group of friends and I started to make parody songs about food and school just to make people laugh, but I realized I really enjoyed writing and rapping and it came to me naturally. I started trying to create actual songs around this time but still wasn’t trying to make a career out of it. I did it primarily to give my peers some positive music to listen to. As I got older I continued to get better and fall deeper in love with the craft until my passion grew to a point that I had no other choice but to go after it fully.
I strive to create innovative music that not only challenges listeners in introspective ways but also offers them hope. At this point in my career I’ve gotten to open up for artists such as KB, Social Club, Steven Malcolm, Aaron Cole, ACjr+BradyJames, and Andy Mineo.
In 2018, I released my debut EP, The Drive. The Drive, spawned my hit single ‘Incognito’, which achieved major success and airplay. I also teamed up with Big Yae and CZAR Josh to drop the double single, 2 for 1 which produced another staple single in my career, JA7A. In 2019 myself and my label, Culture Villains released a compilation album. This album charted at #46 on the iTunes Hip Hop charts. I released my own debut album ‘PROBLEMATIC’ in the fall of 2020. The full length album features stand out singles ‘Problematic’, ‘Botham’ and ‘Uhaul’. The album charted at #28 on the iTunes Hip Hop charts!
My music has also been featured on networks such as Netflix, The CW, BETjams, Revolt, WeTV, and MTV.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is making a positive impact. Every person that my art resonates with is so special to me. As human beings there are certain problems, feelings, and emotions we all are familiar with in different capacities. I believe its my mission to use my voice to address those things from a perspective that validates but also challenges and heals. Receiving messages and DMs from listeners about how they relates to a song or a song helped them through something means the world to me.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’m the type of person that when I’m passionate about something I won’t stop pursuing it. When I first started making music I wasn’t the best at it. Many people didn’t believe I’d become as good as I am now and even told me that I should switch up the subject matter I rapped about if I wanted to be successful. I heard a lot of “no”s early on. I knew in my heart that God had a purpose for me in music, but I also am humble enough to know there’s work I have to do. I truly believe I’m one of the hardest working artists in the space I exist in. I study, practice, rehearse, train etc intentionally. I’m very serious about perfecting my craft and the results of my resilience and hard work are now manifesting to the public.
