We recently connected with Khalia Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Khalia, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I got my first client(s) by posting some of my work and services that I was offering, on social media. A good friend of mine inquired about doing my meal prep, and another customer had me cater their Thanksgiving. I was VERY nervous to do the Thanksgiving catering because it was my first event! My customer was honest with me and let me know where I could’ve done better, and I was very appreciative of the experience.
Khalia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
KhaliasKravings LLC is a private chef & catering company. I am a one woman band and I aspire to become a Traveling Celebrity Private Chef. I got into this business simply because I love to cook. I’ve had a passion for cooking since I was a little girl. I provide catering services for any type of event, such as: weddings, baby showers, birthday’s, funerals, etc. My customers sometimes know what they want to be served, if not, they allow me to come up with their menu for them. I provide a simple yet vibrant display of the food and taste. I am a cajun gourmet style chef, but I love to venture off into other styles of cooking. What I would say sets me apart from other chefs, is my reason for being a chef. People glamorize being an entrepreneur but it is nowhere as easy as it seems. Stepping into my chef shoes, or simply being the small business owner that I am has taught me a lot. I am also the owner of BoujeeGirlBlvd which can be found on Instagram. I am a certified lash tech, certified teeth whitener and I also do facial and body waxing. Running two businesses that are polar opposites, gives me the chance to keep expanding in ways I never sought out. I meet so many different people and seeing them smile from a service that I provided with love & care is the best reward from it all.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have built my social media following from consistent posting, appealing content, and the help of a social media manager. You have to understand and know exactly how to target the people you want to interact with your business. Having good/clear quality pics and videos are very essential. Also, just be yourself, I know that’s a cliche but its the truth. I also can be found on Google by KhaliasKravings LLC. That way people can find me by searching for local and traveling chefs near them, people can see and leave reviews, see pictures, etc. It’s definitely a great way to reach my audience on another big platform.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
There was this time where I was hired for a bridal shower, and everything was set in place for the upcoming event. With that being said, I had my mind set on the fact that the event was on a Sunday… it was actually on a Saturday. Let me tell you, that the only reason I knew I had my days mixed up is because the mother of the bride, sent me a text with the address and basically saying “I’ll see you soon!” Their event was at 12pm I believe, and she sent me a text around 9 going on on 10am. I did not have ANYTHING I needed for the event… I told the mom and she was not happy at all. We agreed on something that I could pull together in an hour and a half. Let’s just say, I ended up getting them their food at a reasonable time and they loved the food. This was a very valuable lesson because it taught me a strong importance on planning in advanced and having better time management. This was something that never happened to me before so I really beat myself up about it for a long time. Eventually a little time went by and the bride who I catered for previously, asked me to cook for them again. It felt amazing that they trusted my business again.
