Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Khalia Aesthetics. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Khalia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
As a young mother living in a city where I was not born and raised I take on a lot of risk. One of the most defining risk I have taken was the risk of attending Esthetician school as a mother. The time devoted for Esthetician school seemed impossible for me to accomplish with me having to still take care of my child and work full time because I still had bills to pay. The amount of support I received at the time was everything I needed to successfully get through Esthetician school. My sons grandmother Sydney and Ron supported me through this time and I am so thankful for them. During that time period it was very difficult and challenging. It’s one of those things I don’t even like to think about because it’s the past and when you are moving forward you don’t look back. My drive comes from loving skin but it also comes from all the challenges I faced while in Esthetician school. To see myself get through that time period of working my full time job from 8am to 5pm and rushing to make it to school by 5:30pm, not leaving school until 9:45pm and then I still made it home in time to tuck my son in at bed at night. There’s no way I can let myself down on my Esthetician journey from the risk that I took. I’m my own inspiration, it’s no way I can let myself or my clients down.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a tree with many branches and my tree stands for all things self care. I’ve always had a drive for caring for not just myself but for others also. It’s in my humanitarian nature. At just 18 years old I was working in the homes of the elderly taking care of them, bathing them, feeding them etc. Climbing the ladder of being a caregiver I decided to be a Medical Assistant. This opened a whole new door for me because I got a chance to work alongside Doctors who were experts in what they did. I am so thankful for this because I got a chance to study how they truely care for their patients from how they communicate with them to how they create plans for them. I worked really close with Doctors and they had no problem teaching me and guiding me. I began to grow so much as a Medical Assistant receiving rewards and being offered leadership clinical roles in my office. At that time I knew it was time for me to grow and move on to other things. I always had a passion for skincare. I’ve always pampered myself with services such as facials, waxes, laser hair removal etc. I had some knowledge with these services just from my personal experience and I was excited to attend Esthetician school to give others the same opportunity to take care of themselves. I have used my clinical abilities and bedside manner as Medical Assistant to enhance my career as an Esthetician. I want my clients to know that I have worked really hard throughout my career and I plan to continue to grow to give you all top tier services. To me this is still the beginning and I want my clients to know that your skin is in the hands of a passionate Esthetician. There has definitely been a lot of difficulties a long the way but I’m here working with a steady clientele and I wouldn’t want it any other way. My tribe of clients has made my job rewarding.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
There has been many things I could point out that has played a role in my strategy for growing clients. When I look back from the strategies I’ve had from when I first started being an esthetician 3 years ago to now the one thing I’ve always been consistent with is just being myself and being honest to my clients about their skin and beauty expectations. Another strategy that has worked for me is I always make sure to have fun with my work. The moment I stop having any fun with my work I’ll be done with it. I think a lot of people sometimes get over stimulated with life, work, being a mother, wife etc so when I add a fun, relatable experience with my work while providing a great service it gives my clients something to look forward to.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I’m still learning the esthetics industry to become truly successful but the main thing that has worked for me is that I’m always genuine and open to learning new things. Also another tip for succeeding in this field is to just be patient and consistent. Great things don’t happen over night.
