We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khadijah Warfield a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Khadijah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Growing up I always struggled with acne and just keeping my skin clear and healthy. I’ve used many major brands and they never seem to work. A girls confidence or anyone for that matter, could be tarnished because of their skin. So I knew first hand that I can’t be the only one that feels like this. Then I had children and my skin couldn’t handle it at all.. I continued to struggle with acne, during the time I had off for maternity leave I was able to sit and research skincare and I started making my own. It gave me amazing results so I started having my friends use it and it worked for them, and I started my business. I’ve helped hundreds of people clear their skin before I became a licensed esthetician. During this time I noticed that skincare wasn’t talked about much in my area. It was always hair, nails, and makeup.. skincare definitely took a backseat on the list of priorities. I knew that this was a field that I could really make a difference in by sharing my story and actually providing a solution for others like myself.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi I’m Khadijah, and I’ve been a licensed esthetician for 5 years. The goal at skinbyatik is to help women with skincare and body waxing in a judgement free zone. I am very result driven when it comes to skincare and body care, but I have noticed that some people don’t always feel welcomed in certain spaces. So I do my best to make sure my clients feel comfortable always, in suite we laugh, joke, and cry. It’s really a joy to be in a space where yes you’re getting a service, but you’re also gaining a confidant and friend.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
This was so hard, you see so many business owners online and can easily get distracted and think you’re suppose to market or show up the same way. Something I learned and started to lean more into was just being myself. Yes I am a business woman but do I have to be strict all the time? NO. Can I have fun and joke in my business? YES. So that’s how I gained most of my social media audience is just being myself and speaking my mind. I know alot of people often say they’re shy, but it’s 2026 people want to know you! I think being personable and relatable goes a long way in business than being robotic.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Actually it did. The biggest step to go from selling skincare to providing services was enrolling in school. I did a 7 1/2 month esthetician program, which was challenging because you’re learning so much information crammed into 7 months. So because of this I was a full time student M-F while also raising two children. During that time in school I was able to grow my knowledge, and it helped in my current business. The next milestone was me opening a suite to service clients, I did this while I was in school so I started out as a solo esthetician. I did that for a year and then when times got hard I decided to work under a company, the big bad wax company lol… during this time I learned a lot about business and esthetic customer service and just overall the do’s and don’ts of the esthetic business. I also learned that I didn’t like working under someone else. So after two years I decided to go solo again get another suite and really scale and take social media serious. I’ve been in my new location for almost 3 years.
