We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Khadijah Page. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Khadijah below.
Khadijah , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
It takes faith, integrity, and self-acceptance to rise above any difficulties you may face in life to achieve both short and long-term goals. Is self-doubt present? Sure. Am I happy? At times. Thoughts of transitioning to a full-time job occurs daily when clients schedule appointments and no show. Clients cancel appointments five minutes prior to their scheduled times or clients taking the opportunity to express their emotions during their appointment and all I can do is be their comfort space.
A recent encounter, two clients were scheduled for the following services, sew in, bundle color and purchase. The clients canceled a few minutes prior to their scheduled appointments. While my business plan could have served as a navigation to sort through scenarios as such. It does not suffice nor replace the financial need for my family. COVID has impacted many lives but also others are still facing other life stressors that results in choosing bills over beauty. Life is full of uncertainties even as a business owner.
Conclusion: “Never giving up” are the words uttered daily that have brought me to where I am in my life today. This mindset helps me continue striving towards my dream and passion of becoming a person that owns a business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Hi, I’m Khadijah Page, licensed cosmetologist located in Birmingham, AL specializing in natural hair care, cuts, custom color, and extension services. My journey started when I was young, hair has always been my first love and passion. So, making a career decision was simply easy because it has always been what I’ve enjoyed and loved doing. Hair is my creative space where I take the opportunity to transform others into their alter ego.
While I’m a Licensed Cosmetologist, I am not a licensed therapist. My clients pour their hearts out to me during scheduled appointments. I can’t solve their life stressors, but I can create a safe place from them to share.
Perseverance set me aside from others. As a single mother of a five-year-old son, he keeps me grounded. I want my son to understand, in life, that many opportunities can be afforded but are only granted to those who demonstrate perseverance and determination. My son’s presence remains as my drive and motivation to always aim for greatness.
Branding is as process and there’s many stages within a process. Once you have completed the stages and imprinted your brand, no adversities can remove your imprint. You will always be remembered by your passion, professionalism, craft, and image you’ve reflected. This is what I want my clients to know about me and the imprint I’m branding.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Consistency and being steadfast. Some individuals do not like change. While we know change is inevitable, clients like consistency. I also ensure, with every greeting that my approach is welcoming and heartfelt. Therefore, when clients are complimented on their styles, they not only provide my name but the deliverance of customer service skills. This is an approach with every new client and even the returning ones which has improved my clientele exceptionally.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Best source for new clients has been both form of advertisement, word of mouth and social media. Clients can share their experience by simply posting on social media or being stopped in the grocery store with a compliment. With the inflation and COVID still wreaking havoc on many families, my prices are affordable. Quality work, appealing customer services skills and affordable prices are attractive skills clients are looking to experience. It has truly been a blessing remaining a float during these difficult times, in which I’m grateful for every new and established client.
