We recently connected with Khadijah Green-Gaskin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Khadijah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative path in life sometime during college. I knew (and still know) I wasn’t meant for the typically 9-5. I loved art, and I needed to continued creating for a living or I wouldn’t be living.
Khadijah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Khadijah Green-Gaskin, formerly Evans. I am 28 and reside in San Antonio, Tx. I’m a former collegiate athlete, coach, now artist and art teacher. I’m a wife, a new mom, and a family woman.
Dia’s Heart is my brand, my business, and essentially my Heart. God is my heart, HE is within everything I do, not above or below, but all within and around.
Art is in your heArt and comes from Him and your heArt.
“Love the Lord your God with all your HeArt, all your mind, and all your soul, and all your strength.”
I love creating bright, colorful paintings and murals that spark a light in others. I love releasing my heart on canvas. When I paint, it doesn’t feel like me painting, but God painting through me. I’ve recently began a series on self-portraits and self-love. I think it’s so important to love yourself and do whatever it takes to take care of YOU, so you can then take care of others around you.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a creative, is seeing my art touch the lives of others. Usually this is when I complete grad caps or paintings of lost loved ones. It means so much to me that I can do something small to help the hearts of others
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to glorify God using the gifts He’s given me; and share Christ’s love and plant seeds that change the world!
But I am not just an artist, I am a dreamer and a fighter. I stand up to injustice, I stand up for the rights of the oppressed. I am not afraid to speak up for those in need.
“Jesus wouldn’t look injustice in the face and do nothing.”
That is true love, and that is my mission.
But also, since becoming a mother, I find a new drive in making sure I am someone my children will be proud of. I yearn to give them a better life than I had, and encourage them that they can do anything their heart desires.
