We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khadijah Baynes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Khadijah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
The Beauty Industry started with just myself ( Khadijah Baynes) and a couple of other stylists. I always wanted to be a salon ownwer, so I was grateful for the opportunity for other stylists to work for me. I ran the day to day operations and really had a blast doing it. It was a great experience, the people, the artists, atmosphere and community. The salon was a perfect blend of a new school and old school vibes with plenty of customers. But over the years I know I wanted more. Year 10 , I transformed my whole salon model and faithfully and determined created a different concept for all beauty professionals. I created a on the go memberships and co working space for stylist. I then partnered with a team that scale the business to a tech platform to launch and go global. I learned never giving up, staying focused and educating yourself along the way will get you whatever your heart desires and I am grateful and thankful to all the people who impact me as well as I impacted.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Khadijah Baynes, I graduated from Atl Tech in Cosmetology. I started at 19 as a professional master cosmetologist and worked at a couple of salons until I got my own 10 years ago in 2014 on the west side of ATL and the 2nd location inside H.E Holmes train station 2 years ago. I have a twin sister. She went to Clark University which is a street over so I was familiar with the neighborhood.
Knowing it was a choice community at that time, I knew that was where
I wanted to plant my roots. I saw the struggle and wanted to beautify my community. The neighborhood was also one of the first African American millionaires which was Bronner Bros that stood on the same street. Over the years, I’ve been grateful to see the changes and progress that has been made and only grateful to be in a place now to see it continue growing and empowering youth to follow their dreams.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source has been showing up still. Engagement and socializing. Flyers, word of mouth.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe engaging amongst the community is what built the relationships and good vibe reputation.
