We recently connected with Keyveona Mitchell and have shared our conversation below.
Keyveona, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
Creating a more inclusive workplace comes with time. The reason that I say this is because a lot of beauty professionals seem to start by working out of their homes. Then, they tend to find a professional workspace. When I started out providing hair services, I started out of my home simply providing a clean work area in my living room or kitchen for me to work. After I gained Enough exposure and my clientele had grown, I started taking it more serious. As time went along in my journey, my goal was to be more professional and make what I do into an actual business. I started by coming up with a name to represent myself and proving an actual booking site for clients to book on. After a while I had a choice of working in a booth or going my own route and working in my own area, rather that was keeping my work area at my home or getting my own small place for myself. I decided that working in my own area was what was best for me. I eventually turned one of the rooms in my home into a simple hair room. Now that time has went by I’ve became more established by upgrading it into my beauty room and making it look more established. I now have social medias for my business and have also became a content creator by making content of my beauty services and life as a hairstylist. Even though I still work from home, I’ve realized due to how I now present myself, my business, and my work area, I’ve gained more consistent clientele that actually likes the privacy of a home based professional hairstylist. I feel that actually making a professional beauty room in my home more inclusive, making how my clients book more inclusive, and making how my clients are able to look my business up on social media more inclusive was very important and impactful because It made me grow professionally in all aspects of being a hairstylist. I feel that making your workplace inclusive shows that your professional and serious about what your providing to others. It also shows that your taking yourself serious. I feel that If your wanting to look professional, definitely make where you work inclusive however your able to.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Hairstylist/Cosmetologist located in Paris Tx. I have been doing hair professionally for 4 years. I provide hair services such as braids, locs, twists, and natural hairstyles. My goal is to provide happiness and hair care for my client’s hair while also providing protective styles. One of my long term goals I have as a whole for my business is to eventually have my own salon to where I provide professional work areas and a place with opportunities and resources to grow others that provide beauty professions into actual careers. The goal behind my brand is mostly about being a young entrepreneur providing others with content of creative hairstyles and knowledge of hair care. Also making others feel good about themselves, making sure their crown is most importantly healthy and taken care of properly. Overall loving what I do as a hairstylist and showing the world my skills.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been the consistency of showing my skills and what I have to offer to my clients and also the persistence of continuing on as a full time hairstylist no matter what.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
The beauty platform that my booking site works through manages everything when it comes to my clients and keeps all of the information put in for each client rather that’s the clients contact info, what they booked, how many times they’ve booked, cancellations, etc. All that I have to do is go to my clients lists and all my clients have their own individual profile with all of their information in it. I can also go in and check analysis on certain information If needed.
