We recently connected with Keyundra Thompson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Keyundra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Writing is something I’ve always been great at. It started as a fun hobby. Believe it or not, I wanted to be a famous singer and dancer as a kid. So I would write songs. That lead to writing poetry and short stories at an early age. I’ve always had a love for reading as well. It was my 8th grade year, and I remember wining an award for writing. It was unexpected, but that’s when I knew I really wanted to write someday. I’ve had several teachers who saw my hidden talent for writing, and fed into my love for reading. I was also vice president of the journalism club in high school
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m from small town Arkansas. I’m a mother of two. My youngest has had a very complexed journey since birth. He’s special needs and medically complexed. I spent lots of time at home with him, and blogging became my way of coping during Covid and our many hospital stays. I have also been a very strong advocate for other special needs families. Someone mentioned writing a book to tell our story. At the time I was exhausted with explaining why my son is the way he is, and I said I couldn’t do it. One day, it just happened. I decided to write a children’s book from a child’s perspective. Who better to reach kids than other kids. I haven’t blogged in a while, but I plan on picking that back up soon. I have 4 more books to soon be published. 3 of the 4 are children’s books as well. I plan to dabble in all genres…..nonfiction, self love, romance, mystery, etc
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The one thing I had to unlearn is not to allow society to tell me where I’m supposed, and what goals I can and can’t accomplish. I had to allow myself to be uncomfortable while making my passion a part of my every day reality
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Lots and LOTS of networking, self promotion and marketing outside of what my publisher does. (They are amazing by the way). It’s also a lot of me getting out of my introverted shell, and allowing people to actually see in my life in a different aspect. I’ve never been one who likes being center of attention. I enjoy playing the background. Now I’m having to push myself to the front, and connect with others. I don’t mind it, because that’s what inspires me even more
