Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keyuna Jones . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Keyuna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The risk I have taken has been something I never imaged being so prolonged that I would constantly have to start over! The hair industry full of competitors and unlicensed to self taught hair stylist that are actually better than those who have had licenses for years. I was once one of those operating and making doing hair my full time occupation without a license. Thankfully I remained covered! I was too busy chasing relationships and birthing four kids, my help was limited. I never gave up I kept going. I went from trying to get my cosmetologist license in 2009 to finally getting my Natural hair care license in 2023. In between I had achieved my Associates degree in education, that wasn’t my passion. I built my own clientele through family and associates over the years and finally used my middle Name NICOLE to brand myself under Fifty Combs LLC. I now own and operate a one chair salon with my own personal space inside a commercial building! I have numerous of clients and wishing to expand and grow my business further along the way. I specialize in locs and I also offer many other natural hair care services.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a licensed natural hair care specialist preferably I choose to care for locs. Although I can do many things my passion comes with being able to give client’s knowledge of their natural hair. Often times I meet people who have no clue about their hair, from treating it, managing and use of products. No person is the same so I treat everyone according to their nature! I built my brand years ago when I would braid hair as a child and later meeting several people who inspired me to do locs. I can jones say I can do locs in my sleep and I enough clients to say it’s all business. I don’t use the same products on clients hair and I try to encourage them to use things that I know for sure will help them along their journey. I became popular in my small town because I was one of few who could handmake and attach locs. I would get a client who had damage from fights and reattach their locs like it never left. The excitement comes from seeing clients believe in me and smiling once they have been serviced by myself, Nicole! I provide organic hair oils that I use on clients and they have given great reviews as high demand. I appreciate the time I put in so much because my work is noticed in many areas of North Carolina.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth! So many people pass along my information and people tell so and so gave me your contacts. Word of mouth will take you further than any source of communication.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing clientele is the use of social media. I post and share my work on platforms that are popular right now. I offer discounts, I post reels and TikTok’s of myself doing hair, clients posting and tagging myself in their posts and stories. The use of social media has been as effective as to me aging clients in states over from where I reside.
