Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keyone Starr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Keyone , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I actually learned to sing hereditarily. I came from a family of singers and musicians, however the cultivation of my artistry and sound came much later. If i knew what i knew now i would’ve properly documented more of my experiences, for example, I’ve toured across London, Australia, Germany & Spain and cant tell you at the moment where all the footage is. I also would strategize better, having a solid team around me to help focus more on the business aspect of my career. In music, having a clear goal and knowledge of the business is essential when being an artist. In my opinion without those key elements one is simply a singer or instrument player. Obstacles like my demographic and lack of mentors played a part in the pace of learning, but never stopped the show!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Keyone Starr, born LaKreshia Keyoné Edwards, a native of Jackson, Mississippi. A preacher’s kid, a Grammy-nominated singer, song writer, and producer trifecta. An electric, rock and roll, soulful singing flower child that humorously refers to myself as the love child of Aretha Franklin and Lenny Kratviz. A natural born entertainer, with a forever goal of singing in the language of the heart of the listener.
My initial claim to fame and declaration performance of the hit single “I Can’t Lose” featured on Mark Ronson’s Uptown Special Album, charted in the top 20 on the billboards and has well over 10 million combined streaming views, alongside the diamond charted single “Uptown Funk”. That alone, has afforded me opportunities to sing, write and produce music featured across Australia, Germany, London,USA, Malaysia and Spain. I’ve shared sets and stages with Bruno Mars, Mary J Blige, Boy George,Tame Impala, and more.
My most recent appearance was on NBC’s American Song Contest, competing for the next hit record with legends like Michael Bolton and every other US state represented. I felt honored to not only make history but also display my songsmith skills on such a large platform.
Although I’m always looking to perform on stages as well as collaborate with producers and other artist. My primary goal is to complete and execute this new music playlist/investor app, “Good App Music”, I’ve been working on. It is being specifically designed to cater to the independent artist and investor, looking to gain or increase residual income through streams and royalties. Truth is, fans and funding are necessary in order for any artist to be successful and my app will help make them both easily accessible.
I am equally proud of all of my accomplishments with aspirations of so much more to come. Ive seen, performed, and experienced things in a short amount of time that some only dream of. However, i am most excited to continue to evolve while sharing my resources and knowledge with those around me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is the limitless possibilities. To me, we are who and what influences the look, feel, and sound of the world. Its a pretty cool gift yet a responsibility.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I would recommend the bible to anyone. You will need faith everyday but especially on the when you’re not as enthusiastic about the journey. Also i would advise anyone to read Breaking the Habit of being Yourself, by Joe Dispenza, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Those books helped take me out of my own head and made me more relatable to the people i desired to connect with.
