We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keymah White. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keymah below.
Hi Keymah, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I was 17 years old when I took my first flight. Alone. To Texas. To chase my dreams of becoming a superstar. I was only a junior in high school. Prior to this happening, I Auditioned for a Girl Group by the name of “Karma”, a singing group based in Memphis, Tennessee that comprised of 3 young talented girls, but at the time, was in need of a third member. When I First Auditioned for the group, I was told no. I was taller than the other girls and my style didn’t match the look of the group. I was also told my voice would stick out. Ultimately, I didn’t fit into the image of what was created for the group. I went home discouraged but back to my normal high school life. A couple months later, me and my mom was shopping in a grocery store when I received a call from the manager of that same group. She told me that the girl they found wasn’t a good fit and that they need a replacement asap because the group was booked for a performance just days away. She then proceeded to ask if I would be willing to take that spot temporarily and fly out to Texas to learn the show and rehearse with the girls. I was so in shock but Once my mom approved my answer was immediately yes. We both were cuttin up in that check out line , just excited for the opportunity. I took my first flight at 17 years old. Alone. To Texas. To chase my dreams of becoming a superstar. I hopped in, learned the show, and performed to the best of my ability. That was the start of my 2 year , Girl-Group journey. I could’ve been bitter that the door was closed in my face the first time but my passion drove me to see the opportunities to come. I don’t regret it one bit. I’m no longer in that group, currently independent, but Being in it allowed me to get a taste of the life I know I want to live. It helped develop me as an entertainer and offered long lasting connections.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Keymah but on stage I go by the name of Keymah Reneé ( I normally sing that part). I sing , Model, act , dance a little and I write. Before getting to this point of having my toe in the door of the industry , I sang in church, school, and basically auditioned for anything I could audition for. I sang any and everywhere. On the street. On the train. Or just any time someone called me out. That’s how I started to get my name out there. Networking is a huge part of my artistry because I learned that sometimes it’s not always what you know but WHO you know. That’s how I started to get bookings and referrals. If you’re reading this and you’re on the path of superstardom remember to be dedicated, consistent, Network and stay true to who you are. It gets hard and there will always be someone trying to control your career for you but what is for you will always be for you.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I believe NFTS are the future. I would love to get me one made just for me so if you know someone that knows someone, hook ya girl up !
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After quitting the group I went into a slight depression and I wanted to quit music. I felt as if the path wasn’t for me. However I believe in God and the signs he sends when I’m in that state of mind. Not too long after quitting the group , I got another opportunity which led me to getting signed to Flo Rida’s Label IMG STRONGARM back home in Miami, Florida. On the road to success, there will alway be bumps and blockades until you get to where you need to be. People love scamming hungry upcoming artist and False promises are always being made. Stay the course. Plants always grow after the storm.
