We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keyla Marte a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Keyla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Worked for political and government agencies, advocating for others through start-up ventures. Keyla worked for a non-profit but got laid off before the pandemic. As a result, at the same time as the job loss, she lost her housing. She was subject to living in a hotel and on her friend’s couch for a couple of weeks.
Months later, on the brink of a national crisis and lack of security in the job market, Keyla took a leap of faith and began her own venture. Her desire to create meaningful change led her to pursue her own business despite adversity and housing insecurity.
Keyla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was raised in East Harlem, NY & raised by a single mother of four.
I got into my industry after helping people update their resumes and cover letters. I quickly realized most people were unfilled in their roles and wanted to start their own businesses.
With this in mind, I began coaching aspiring entrepreneurs. In particular, women who didn’t feel confident to launch their vision.
What sets us apart from other consulting firms, is we’ve been there. We’ve been undervalued and overworked. We’ve been unfilled and limited. We know the difficulties and challenges it is to take the next step and to hold yourself accountable. Our unique wrap-around hands-on approach to turn your idea into action.
At Keyla Consulting – We believe in lifting others while we climb. You may not have all the pieces, but if you just start it will all come together. I am most proud of creating results for everyone I work with.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Growing up in East Harlem, adversity was a norm. Whether it was not having enough money for clothes for the new school year or not knowing where your next meal would be. The challenges were hard. I vowed to find a way to empower my community. After becoming a first-generation college graduate, I was eager to fight my way out of poverty.
Just when you thought you get a head start, the reality kicks in that you start in the negative with school debt.
After securing my first real job, a few years later right before the pandemic, I was laid off and weeks later I face housing insecurity. With no idea what was next, I stepped out on faith and launch my own business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that you need all the pieces in order to start. I can’t explain the amount of fear and hesitation I let cripple me in the past when thinking about running my own business. Whether it was not knowing enough (even if I read all “how to” books) or just doubt.
I had to realize that most of us – didn’t know what we were doing when we first started. We just start!
I suffered from perfectionism – wanting everything to be perfect before I launched but I quickly realize in business you always should be thinking about refreshing and restarting! If Apple stopped at their first iPhone and didn’t restart with new products we would not have all the devices we had today.
It’s okay to not have all the pieces, It’s okay to still have questions. Start anyway
