Keyia, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
It takes a lot to become successful. More so personally. I feel as though your mental health matters, your support system, finances, and lastly, but the most significant is your spirit. It takes you knowing and believing you’re successful even when reality is showing otherwise. Of course, faith without work is dead. However, investing and obtaining your focus is really all you need. Nothing ever really happens over night, but hard work and dedication beats every odd, every single time!

Keyia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Keyia, owner and operator at PoreStar Aesthetics. I am a licensed Esthetician here in Memphis, TN. I got into the beauty industry in 2017 applying eyelash extensions after I left Hooters. I enrolled in Esthetics school in 2018 after the passing of my grandmother because at that point in my life I really just needed joy and an outlet that brings me income. I’ve always been intrigued with anything cosmetics related as a child I was just always told that college was the answer. College is cool, but I’m my happiest inside of the industry.
Discipline was a big thing for me when I got started. Going to school every single day and actually wanting to be there help me see a bigger picture. I started PoreStar right after I graduated school. It took some trial and error moving from one beauty salon to another. Over paying booth rent, not being able to service my clients as needed, etc was really detrimental to me, but honestly it molded me into the business owner I am now.
In my spa, we only use Dermalogica. Absolutely in LOVE with everything Dermalogica. It has my clients and myself glowing and feeling amazing after every session. I also provide eyelash extension services!
What sets me apart from others is the compassion behind what I do. I’m not here to just take your money nor am I here to just render a service. I educate my clients (skin care and eyelash) about everything it is that I’m doing. I want people to grow and learn about what it is they’re investing in. Cosmetics is nothing but an investment, so why not? Any of my clients will tell you that I don’t mind declining services.
I am most proud of the fact that I’ve consistently been doing Esthetics for 3 years now!! I’ve always been one to question myself or what it is I’m doing. Being an Esthetician has brought me out of my shell, and I’ve met so many amazing people along the way of me becoming a professional. Since a child I’ve always wanted my own business so to be doing this and people actually buy into it just makes my heart flutter. I love knowing that I can make someone feel so beautiful. We love originality and confidence regardless of what look like to others.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience mainly from my personal Instagram account and by word of mouth from clients and friends. My advice would be to figure out a target audience and go from there. Keep it professional on your platform and also consistent. Your content should stay relevant at all times!!!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I’ve used is enhancing services and referral discounts. Also, email and SMS marketing!!! Throwing random or holiday specials has also brought me new clientele.
