We recently connected with Keyara Cooley and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Keyara, thanks for joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
Crazy story. This actually happened while working in a well known waxing establishment right before I started my own waxing business. I had a client that had booked a Brazilian wax, you know, the usual. When she came to her appointment, she had brought her newborn baby with her. I greeted her and then asked, “How long ago did you have your baby?”. She said, “Oh I had her 5 weeks ago”. I thought to myself, “Well she’s suppose to wait 6 weeks to start waxing again but what’s one week? She should be fine.” She then proceeds to undress from the waist down and gets on the table. As I start to clean her private area with a wax cleanser, a small insect crawls off of her and onto the table. I jumped hard and killed the insect with the paper towel in my hand. The client never asked what’s wrong or anything like a normal person’s reaction would be, she just stared at me. I’m that moment, I knew that she knew what she had going on in her private area. She thought that she could solve that problem by getting waxed instead of going to her doctor to get treated for crabs all the while putting me at risk as well. I told her that I would be right back and left the room to tell the franchise owner what happened and what I saw. He literally told me, “You can’t see crabs with the naked eye!” I said. “ We’ll I saw something because I literally killed the bug on the table and I don’t feel comfortable waxing her.” He said that I still had to wax her while he called corporate to get their opinion on what to do. I knew after this incident that I would be quitting. There were other things that the owner said and did before this that I did not like but this incident was the cherry on top. I went back in the room, waxed the client while feeling itchy all over, and got her out of there. The owner thought that giving me and extra $60 cash in my hand would make me feel better. I deserved way more than a measly $60! I quit soon after and opened up KC Waxing Studio LLC and haven’t looked back since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Keyara Cooley and I own and operate KC Waxing Studio LLC. My business has been open for 4 going on 5 years and I’ve been a licensed Esthetician for 6 years. I am currently enrolled in a Nursing program so that I can expand my business into a Medi Spa where I’ll be able to to IV hydration, Botox/fillers, and other medical grade beauty treatments.
I am proud that I have accomplished so many goals that I never thought would happen. Opening a business, keeping my business afloat, taking care of myself on my own, and getting accepted into a very competitive nursing program.
I’m mainly known for my quick 15 minute or less Brazilian wax service. Most of my clients have been with me since I was a newbie esthetician. They love my technique and most say it’s less painful than other wax services that they have received before they came to me.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve built my audience on social media by actively posting and engaging with my audience. I’ve hired a social media marketing manager recently to help me grow my audience even more and to mange my social media pages as I have less time to do this myself since I’m in a busy nursing program.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I send emails at least twice a month and I occasionally create customer appreciation deals/discounts to keep my clientele coming back.
