We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keya Rogers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keya below.
Hi Keya, thanks for joining us today. Is there a historical figure you look up to? Who are they and what lessons or values have you learned from them?
I look up to Nipsey Hussle, his ambition, determination and drive set him apart from so many others. He wasn’t given the tools he needed to succeed but instead he created his own, and gave back to his community while doing so. His approach to his success was unlike any others, he was innovative, creative and a leader in his community. His story motivates me in multiple ways and I aspire to leave a mark on my people that’s just as influential as Nipsey’s.
Keya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Keya Rogers. I got into the hair and skin industry thanks to my daughter Kylah. When Kylah was a baby she had very dry skin and little to no hair, which encouraged me to make home remedies to help her skin and hair. The older Kylah got the more I realized my products really were working so I continued to study and research different things until one day I decided to share my products with others. I have a unique ability to listen to what others need, research what will help and create a concoction that actually works! Some thing I help my customers with is acne, I have a seamoss face mask and cleansing toner that will start clearing up acne within 3 days of use. I also have oatmeal body cream and bath soak that helps with all kinds of dry skin. My hair growth oil stimulates the scalp and encourages hair growth after consistent use. What sets me apart from others is I find pleasure in helping people, the money isn’t as important to me as it may be to some people. My goal is to help others, not be the most popular or the most known but to provide the most products that WORK! I’m most proud of my products and being able to get them in the hands of some well known actors, comedians and models such as Sumie, Kahleigh Comedy and Compton Menace.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started my business in 2020 when COVID-19 hit. We were in a time where we were stuck in the house quarantining, everyone was scared to go outside and the government was issuing us money. I used every dollar the government gave me and put it into purchasing supplies, ingredients and launching my website.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the idea that all of my family and friends would support me. While unlearning that idea I had to teach myself that it’s not personal, it’s business… the majority of my support and customer base comes from complete strangers. People that don’t even know me want to see me win and will be more supportive in my business than the people I put that expectation on. Sometimes not even your family will help you win, some will look at you in doubt and then act suprised when they see you succeed. Don’t let that stop or discourage you! Keep going!
