We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Key Tori a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Key Tori thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?

The moment I knew I was a corrective skincare specialist.

I’ve been in the beauty industry for 8yrs, I started off as a Lash Artist but I wanted more but didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do but I knew college wasn’t my thing. I decided to get my license as an esthetician because I was interested in doing facials. During school I realized I did not care for facials at all! It was so repetitive, we did the same exact steps for every single facial guest that we saw. So I did not want to do another facial when I finished.

I became very interested in waxing because it was something we didn’t do as often. I became curious to learn more about waxing as a craft. So I applied to European Wax Center and loved every bit of it. But after a while I wanted more, I wanted to do more provide more to my clients. So during the pandemic I took a leap of faith.

I went through a horrible phase of Acne and hyperpigmentation (dark spots) it lowered my self confidence, self esteem literally everything. I used my hats to hide my face because I was not comfortable in my skin. I tried all at home DIY remedies nothing worked, tried drug store skincare nothing worked. During the pandemic I felt like it was time to fix my skin, I knew I could do it and I had to figure out how. I invested time in reading skin books, I attended webinars, I became a certified Acne Specialist with Face Reality Skincare. I put all of this information together and I cleared my skin. I had a thought if I could do this for myself I can definitely do it for other women, women who look like me. I became the solution I had been looking for, for years. I was able to create skincare routines combined with treatments based off the conditions of my or someone else’s skin and create a clear healthy canvas.

I decided to stop offering lash extension services and focus on corrective skincare.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Lash extensions introduced me into the beauty industry. I used to get lash extensions and loved the way it boosted my confidence and decided I wanted to offer it to other women. But after experiencing acne and everything that follows behind acne, the acne scars, the darks spots I changed my path and became a Licensed Esthetician who specializes in Acne and Hyperpigmentation, where my goal is to help rebuild my clients confidence during and through the process of clearing their skin.

I offer lux customized facials because no ones skin is the same, I love to customized every facial to each person based off what their skin is needing at the time. I also offer advanced corrective treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, nano-needling and more while providing my clients with the skincare products they need to achieve their skin goals.

I love to take the holistic approach when clearing my clients skin, because a lot of us don’t realize how impactful our lifestyle choices can be on our skin. So I provide resources, discuss and educate my clients of better lifestyles options to clear skin acne and hyperpigmentation as well.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?

Mentorship has definitely helped me get to where I am today. I’ve invested into 3 mentorship programs and they have all had a great impact of how my business is growing. I think it is always great to learn from others who are where you want to be in your industry. All of my mentors have helped me avoid a lot of hurtles that they ran into, they’ve guided me to think differently from others so I can stand out, and so much more.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?

The most effective strategy that has help me grow my clientele has been telling stories of my clients skincare journey, word of mouth when people see that my clients skin is clearing it intrigues others to come to me, and social media especially instagram by showing my work and educating people.
