Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kewzah Blair. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kewzah, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Kool Tiezz is a custom necktie line that offers uniquely designed ties & accessories that allows you to transform any outfit. Our neckties stand out against the rest for their one of a kind cut in the face of the tie that adds a fashion back into the world of menswear, whether you are dressing up or down depending on the occasion.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Kool Tiezz was started a few years back when my son and I started a bonding journey to seek entrepreneurship. I wanted him to understand the importance of having a professional path but also explore your internal talents. Well, one night, I dreamt of an altered necktie. When I woke up, I went to Goodwill & purchased three traditional neckties, Walmart to buy some card stock paper and went home to trace out different ides. Once I settled on my first three cuts, I visited several seamstress in the immediate area. Many told me that they couldn’t bring my creation to life, until I stumbled across one lady named Annie. She was a sweet lady with decades of experience and she was happy to take on the challenge.
Once she brought my vision to life and the 1st prototype was made and fully functional, I realized the lack of accessories for menswear and what a statement Kool Tiezz would make in the retail space. In 2019, I was able to expand my brand to extend to adult, young gent and toddler size ties. There’s always tons of lady accessories, but hardly anything for men, until now.
We now offer adult, young gent and toddler size ties made to transform any outfit. Fast forward to 2022, we are extremely proud of our recent features on ABC, KUSI and Fox5 News. As we ease into the new year, we are quickly approaching our peak season of Easter, Graduation and Father’s Day, when millions across the US celebrate accomplishments and celebrate life, love and happiness and we want to be a part of your special day.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Back in 2019, I expanded Kool Tiezz by creating a very tailored necktie that fit the boy stature of young gents (7-15). By doing so, I was able to create another market that aligns with young gents to ensure that the neckties are not too small, or too big. As a result, I started pitching Kool Tiezz to Middle Schools from all over to share my product. Now I can make Kool Tiezz available for young gents for 6th or 8th promotions, and make wearing ties ‘cool again’.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started Kool Tiezz with using my disposable income. Instead of buying expensive shoes, or purposes, I used my tax returns or small bonuses from work to buy more product. Once I started to sell, I would always put money back into my business. Not everyone has the opportunity to do this, but IF you can – it’s good to try and establish a foundation a bit before I you request any loans. Or, if you can you can also apply for grants. Small Business Administration (SBA) is a good resource.
