We were lucky to catch up with Kevon Chisolm recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kevon , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
It is our mission to help the underserved communities by providing financial education to as many youths and adults as possible. All we need is financial support to help us achieve our mission.
Kevon , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Almost five year ago, my then 11 year old son, Kamari and I launched Black Wallstreeter Consultation Services. Our motto is: Building Wealth Through Investment Clubs. The primary focus of the business is assisting others with starting and operating investment clubs. We believe that investment clubs are a great way for underserved individuals to build wealth by pooling their resources to invest in the stock market. After few years into the business, it slowed up because many members of underserved communities are unfamiliar with the stock and were not interested in starting investment clubs or investing in the stock market. So, Kamari and I launched a non-profit, Junior Wallstreeters, Inc. The mission of Junior Wallstreeters is to address the wealth gap between underserved communities and whites through financial literacy and investing summer camps and after school programs for youths. We also developed a financial literacy curriculum that is geared towards helping underserved communities improve their financial situation.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
We had to pivot from Black Wallstreeter because many adults were not interested or familiar with investing in the stock market. Although many adults were not interested, they wanted their children or grandchildren to learn at an early age. So, we decided to focus on helping their children. The first year that Junior Wallstreeters offered online financial literacy and investing summer camps, we had over 100 campers. Thus, it was a great decision to pivot.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We keep in touch with our clients by having monthly meetings. After our summer camps are over, all campers are welcome to join our Alumni Group at no additional cost to them. Once a month, we invite all of our campers to attend an online meeting in which we cover a financial related topic. Our goal is to make the learning on-going even after camp has ended. We also try to offer at least one new camp every summer. For example, last summer, we offered a camp titled: Introduction to Investing in Real Estate.
