We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Turcios. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Alright, Kevin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
For almost 2 years I did most of my creative work for free. It was a total investment in what I believed I could be great at. I sharpened my skills, connected with other creatives in the city, failed a bunch and had many regrets in the process. When I finally decided to pursue a job where I would have to strike a deal, I didn’t feel any pressure to just tell them what I charged. I got connected to a non profit in Austin, Texas who sponsor people with disabilities. What they do is incredible. They help those who are disabled who are also unable to afford helathcare, pay for their outpatient physical therapy. When they approached me with this requests, I couldn’t say no. Not only am I being paid for my creativity and building a video to help them communicate to those around them, but I’m also getting to show people the incredible stories of those who were helped.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kevin Turcios, owner of Turcios Pro. I’ve always been creative, but now I’m mostly known to capture incredible people, and expose their uniqueness to the world. I create videos for small businesses, non profits, churches and more! I use black magic 6k pros and sony cameras to do my work.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t necessarly want to be cool or want my videos to be know as cool. I just want to be able to take someones message, make it purposeful, and give those who watch an opportunity to jump on board with product, business or person.
I’m most proud of being able to work with my friends. Every project I do, I have those who are loyal around me creating gold. One day, my business will be know to open doors for people to thrive in.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the biggest thing society can do is not compete with others but help elevate. In the creative world, everyone has thier own opinion or preference. When people learn that everyone has their own “thing” we can help elevate eachother.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Reason for this journey is to leave a legacy for my children. I’m a child of immigrants from El Salvador and I know how much my parents had to sacrifice to give my brother and I a bigger opportunity. I’m not taking that for granted. So at the end of life, I want my business to be known as honorable, to have integrity, and to love/impact as many people as possible.
