We recently connected with Kevin Sommers and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Good morning My name is Kevin Sommers I am a veteran of the United States Army of Thirteen Years. In 2019 I was deployed to Africa. While gone I had plenty of dreams & aspirations becoming an actor & starting my clothing line was amongst a few of them. Little did i know that when i arrived home in 2020 that the wasn’t quite the same as I left it. I arrived home from war into a real war COVID 19.
It was a life changing experience for me & my family because I’m usually a very upbeat & optimistic person but the world felt like it was going through a state of confusion & uncertainty. Things that i considered normal was abnormal & the world was completely shut down. This was a time when the true test of my faith was being challenged. I prayed one night & asked GOD for clarity & what i could do to change this negative situation into a positive. GOD provided me with the answer & just said son BE YOURSELF! I thought long & hard about what GOD meant & i said to myself what could the world use at this moment? words of encouragement positive affirmations & motivation to endure & overcome.
A few months later I took a risk & created a clothing brand called Positive Energy Brand. I had absolutely no prior experience in making clothes as much as I appreciated my own sense of fashion this time was very different. I took a part of myself & put it in my clothing line. My goal was to bring back positivity, bring back joy to the world. This was cross i was willing to bear. I took the risk in 2020 to fight for the war for positive energy. In retrospect it was the best decision in my life it gave me a true belief in myself & sense of real purpose. I encourage everyone to take that risk on themselves the best version of yourself is awaiting.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Husband Father of three two girls & one boy. I got into the fashion industry by purchasing 12 hoodies one day & placing my brand on it. I marketed & advertised my brand on social media & the rest was history. The service I provide is showing people that words do have power. I provide those words of positive affirmations for them. What makes me unique & different from others I would say that I don’t only want people to look good i want people to feel good. I want folks to have that feeling when they put on my brand they themselves believe in the words that its saying & are willing to act on it. Energy doesn’t die it just transfer. I would say i find creative ways of being that vessel. What i am most proud of is that I look negativity in the face everyday & i ask “is that all you got?” I am not afraid to be great & i know deep down folks just need that motivation to bring what’s already in them out. I want my followers & potential future clients to know that even in dyer times you’re not alone in this battle & this fight for Positive Energy.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Its very interesting that I see this question. I have a strong faith in GOD I don’t believe in coincidences. I love the story of David & Goliath its a true underdog story also a strong indication that it is nothing that we can not achieve. Part of my brand is called Positive Energy W.A.R. WAR is a acronym for [We Are Resilient]. I wanted to inform people that in order to win the war we must defeat the battle from within. I lost my father while serving my country & it was the most devastating experience in my life. Had it not been for my heavenly father i would not have made it. I was at my lowest point, but GOD reminded me that my father will always be with me. I now carry his legacy he embodied positive energy. He was a walking magnet & I am resilient because of the things that he taught me.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist would be watching my creativity come to life. The visions that I get to think of the creation are mind blowing at times. I don’t get to admire my work much I really just enjoy the creative process of it all. My pet peeve is presentation. The best analogy I can compare the process would be like a chef preparing food. I don’t get to taste the food much often but i can see that it looks good. The reward for me is when I get a random consumer come up to me & say “hey that Positive Energy hoodie you sold me every one keeps asking me where did i get that from!”. for me that’s my yes they’re enjoying the food moment the client is satisfied that’s my the crowd is going wild moment.
