Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Solomon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The story behind the mission is simple. I built a platform where independent artists and creators can thrive. When I began SlaughtaHouze in the early 2000s it was to help launch careers. Serve a stepping stone for individuals to harness their talents and passion. Not everyone can get chosen and signed to a lucrative business deal so we took the average indie artist and gave them a place to to grow. Grow a fan base and etc. SlaughtaHouze was MY TABLE. I wanted to “have a seat” at their table meaning I wanted to get signed to a record label or link wit an established crew but none of that happened QUICK ENOUGH for me so I created my own “brand” and made a way for people like me who share the same
passion I have, to get SHINE in the Houston Hip Hop community.
Kevin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
If you’re reading this, THANK YOU very much for taking the time out of your schedule. I’ve done several interviews and they are available on my link that’s attached. The story is the simple, I was an underground rapper/DJ with BIG DREAMS and did whatever it took to make some waves in the Houston Hip Hop scene in the 2000s. Took more L’s than W’s but it was all good. I intend for SlaughtaHouze to be the next big indie rap label at the time. We released a slew of mixtapes featuring myself and many aspiring rappers. We sold mixtapes in record stores ( when that was still a thing ) in Houston and surrounding areas. Saw local and regional success but fell off cause the funds faded quickly. Took a step back, reup and got back on the grind. I changed the plan but not the goal. We changed with the times and found success with a new format. What makes me proud is the fact that this IDEA which was created by me and my homeboy over 20 years ago is being accepted by the masses globally when we struggled locally back then. I appreciate everyone who enjoy the content on our platforms and encourage others to click that link and download our FREE mobile app.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The social media game is INSANE! Promoting is a whole JOB by itself. 60% of my time is promoting SlaughtaHouze. The idea is to FLOOD YOUR FEED. Stay in their face! I spend a lot on social media marketing campaigns and other ways to get the SlaughtaHouze link to the masses. LIKES don’t concern me, I’m in it for the INSIGHTS and ENGAGEMENTS.
I don’t care if you LIKE it I just want you to SEE it
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
So many moments come to mind because the struggle was SO REAL back then. Nothing was perfect to me. I was my WORST CRITIC so I blocked my own shine. Always had the DRIVE but not the BELIEF. I took leaps but not the initial leap of faith. I couldn’t. I had a family, a demanding job, rent and bills “THE REALITY” so I wasn’t about to risk it all on “THE DREAM” The dream kept me motivated to trap in both worlds so after I handled my business, I handled THE BUSINESS.
As I progressed in the game, I let go of the fear and began to BELIEVE in myself and what I was doing. SlaughtaHouze is a show and the show must go on. It’s out here for the world to enjoy and if they jump on that’s great. If they don’t, it’s still here,
