Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Pinkerton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first started to take art seriously when I was in High school. And I had the opportunity to take free classes on Saturday mornings at The School Of Visual Arts and the Parsons School Of Design,I did the for three years and I took drawing classes at The Art Students League.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Upon graduation from i went to The school Of Visual Arts in NYC. I studied painting drawing. And I also took some art history classes at CUNY. I also attended The French Culinary Institute in NYC I jokingly would tell people the reason I entered culinary school is because I didn’t wanna be a starving artist and figured I could get at least one good meal a day if I worked in a restaurant or hotel. And then several years latter I moved to Taiwan Republic Of China and lived there for 30 years with my wife and we raised our daughter there.
I immersed myself in the local culture and the local art scene. This was in the 1990’s when not many foreign artist were working in Asia. Living in Taiwan gave me the opportunity to travel to different south east Asian countries at that time.I was the only foreign artist working in at that time and was very happy being accepted in the local art community and had the opportunity to show my art in local gallery throughout Taiwan I had the opportunity to represent the United States with an art exchange of my artwork with Japanese artists through the interchange foundation of Japan. I produced many art works also got to build a local collector base in Taiwan. I got to meet. other Foreign artist and curators who were invited to Taiwan.
And now I have been back in the United States for the past four years living and working in Michigan in my studio and. still maintain an art studio in Taiwan that I use when I return to Taiwan on occasion and still active in the community there.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing is that being an artist is that I get to express myself every day and people get to see my art work. And I hope people who see my artwork can have their own dialogue with it and hope it is a catalyst for them to also to discuss my work with other viewers and continue to have a dialogue about my artwork.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I think to have more business skills would be very beneficial. Since Covid the world drastically changed as an artist or creative you need the have the skills managing your art career. Now you have to all your admin things You need to know how to promote yourself
since a lot of galleries aren’t doing that for a lot of artists and learn to use social media and how
algorithms work.
