We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevin Ogle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kevin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve been in the service industry for almost 30 years and started at the age of 11. I was fascinated by the chaotic yet seamless fluidity of how it all worked. As often as I could, I would watch the chef and the kitchen staff trying to make sense of how they made it all come together. I knew what I wanted to do from that moment on.
Music has always been a major influence in my life from a very young age. My dad sang for over 40 years in Barbershop quartets and chourses. He encouraged me to learn to play several instruments, read music, and how to sing properly. I learned to appreciate all music and the differences in how instruments and vocals come together to create a beautiful sound. Combining both service industry experience and my passion for music eventually led me to become the General Manager of BB’s Jazz Blues and Soups. Learning the art of sound engineering has been a difficult and sometimes humbling skill to learn. I’ve been fortunate to have some of the best sound men in St Louis instructing me in this vital part of live music. I still have a lot to learn, but with my dad’s musical influence and gracious instructors, I am on the right path to succeed.

Kevin , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began working in my first restaurant at age 11 until I was 13. It was then I knew what I wanted to do with my life. To gain every advantage possible, I worked several jobs related to the restaurant industry to learn about food, the different tastes, textures and flavors depending on how you prepared them. The combinations and possibilities seemed endless to create whatever you could dream up. The art of cooking captured my curiosity and passion for creativity and delicious beautiful food.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal for BB’s Jazz Blues and Soups has been to make it the very best live music venue with world class music and a staff that strives for service above and beyond customer expectations.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Our focus for 2024 and beyond has been to support young up and coming musicians, particularly female led bands and genres of music that seem to be overlooked at times. Ultimately it’s about the connection that music brings to the people and the wave of emotions experienced as you listen.
