We were lucky to catch up with Kevin Myers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
One of the best things about being an orthopedic surgeon is that patients will come to me with a specific problem, torn ACL or rotator cuff for example, and I am able to fix their problem and get them back to the things they want to do. It’s very rewarding to see my athletes who have been injured get back onto the field and accomplish their goals. There is no better feeling than when a patient leaves the office on their final post-op visit and they are cleared to return to all activities – it’s almost like a graduation in a way. I also have many heartwarming stories, especially from my hip arthroscopy patients. Hip arthroscopy is a newer field and there are very few surgeons in the area who are able to perform the surgery or are familiar with hip pathology. Just recently there was a young woman who I had performed surgery on both of her hips for labral tearing and femoroacetabular impingement. She had pain and limitations for years and had been unable to receive the correct diagnosis or treatment until she came to me. At her last visit, she told me “Thank you for giving me my life back.” Moments such as this make all the hard work, training, and sacrifice worth it.
Kevin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty fellowship training and certification in orthopedic sports medicine. I provide operative and non-operative treatment to athletes and active patients of all levels and backgrounds. My practice is OrthoTexas – Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. We are a large group of subspecialty trained orthopedic surgeons with all different aspects of the musculoskeletal system covered: knee, hip, shoulder, hand, elbow, spine, joint replacement and arthritis, foot & ankle. We see adult and pediatric patients at four locations: Plano, Frisco, Carrollton, and Denton. We offer comprehensive and compassionate care with the office, x-ray, PT, MRI, and surgical facilities all together on site. What sets our group apart is that you know you will be seeing a board-certified specialist – an orthopedic physician who has specific training and experience in your condition or body part. We also have walk-in hours every morning and evening during the week to accommodate urgent issues, and are often available for same day appointments in the case of an injury.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
My orthopedic training was a very important starting point in my career. After medical school, I performed my orthopedic surgery residency at Northwell Health in New York. I then was chosen to attend sports medicine fellowship at the world-renowned Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center in Birmingham, AL. During my fellowship, I treated professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, and WWE, as well as the athletes from the University of Alabama. I also served as the team physician for the University of West Alabama and assisted in the care of the Birmingham Barons AA baseball team and the Alabama Ballet. I have continued to serve the sports team community and I am the team physician for the NBA G League Texas Legends as well as Hebron High School. This training was an important stepping stone in my success; however, the field of orthopedic surgery is continuously evolving and we are always perfecting our treatment and technique to achieve the best possible outcomes. My focus is on providing the best patient care with the best outcomes possible. Knowledge and skill is a requirement, but by far the most important element in my success is being able to relate and connect with my patients. I treat my patients the same way I treat my family members. I try to explain their options in a manner that makes sense to them, and we come to a mutual decision on the next steps.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I have published multiple articles on: shoulder and elbow injuries in the throwing athlete, biological joint resurfacing, meniscus repair, stem cells, and ligament reconstruction. I have also written multiple book chapters and operative technique manuscripts on meniscus repair, meniscal scaffolds, and olecranon stress fractures. I am an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and their monthly research journal is an excellent resource. I believe it is important to stay current and on the cutting edge.

I have had a right knee replacement with Dr Myers. I appreciate him listening to me about the pain before. I will probably be back next year for foot & toe surgery!’
