We were lucky to catch up with Kevin Mugabo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
It all started in 2016. I always had a passion for photography, especially for Street /Urban art. So, I decided to purchase a Canon DSLR camera and started practicing with that. The first thing I learned was shooting long-exposure. After a year of just shooting Urban, landscape, and some Nature. I proceeded to learn how to shoot portraits. And to this day in November 2023, I am still practicing and learning as much as I can.
What could I have done to speed up my learning process?
I will say just by practicing as much as possible. For example, I did one year without using my camera in 2019. Beginning of 2020 I restarted shooting and not long after, COVID-19 happened but that was out of my control. What I could have done in 2019 was perhaps keep shooting from time to time and just keep the work on my camera, since I was not ready to be active on social media just yet.
Essential skills?
Consistent, patient, and sympathetic.
Obstacle?
As I mentioned earlier about COVID-19, before the lockdown, we used to meet up among photographers and models for collaborations but due to the pandemic, things were not the same anymore even after the city opened up again.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kevin Mugabo, a photographer based in Houston, TX. I shoot Nature, Urban, Portrait, and Event and I am a self-taught photographer.
I not only charge for my work nor freeze your best moments in time but I like collaborating with other artists.
Let’s all bring something to the table so we can create a masterpiece.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Even if you are not ready to book your photo session, there are other ways to support the local article that will not cost you anything; for example by liking, commenting, or sharing our work on social media. Not forget to give credit where credit is due!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a photographer is to see my old customers booking me again.
