We recently connected with Kevin Moraczewski and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I was fortunate enough to earn a living as a photographer/creative director for 4+ years . Long story short – I was a wedding photographer who, after a while, wanted to try something completely different for a living. So I went into real estate. This was a great way to let me focus on personal projects while earning a living doing something other than photography.
The brokerage I worked for required the agents to be responsible for their own advertising, including photography. This worked perfect for me, as I had a leg up on my competition. My competing agents at my brokerage were aware of my advertising style and noted the success I was having. This lead to agents offering to commission me to photograph their listings in addition to my own. Fast forward a couple years later, the management commissioned me to create the portraits of the agents/staff, and encouraged me to continue to photograph the other agent’s listings as much as possible.
This went on for a few months more, and the brokerage offered me a full time photography position, and gave me full creative control over the company website, all advertising including sponsored ads, new developments, email blasts, etc.
Knowing what I know now, I am not sure I would have done anything differently. I built the relationship from the ground up.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Kevin Moraczewski, a real estate photographer living in New York. I got into the industry by being a photographer prior to being an agent, and then using the relationships I’ve made over the years to build a photography business. I am very passionate about film photography in my spare time.
I provide a pretty standard service of photos, video tours, and floor-plans. I set myself apart by having an unique perspective. I come from the perspective of being both an agent AND the photographer, so I see the end result from both sides. Most of the other real estate photographers are just photographers. From my unique perspective, I can see in real time which photos tend to get the most hits, which angles are the most flattering, which work best for digital staging, etc.
I’m most proud of being commissioned to do the advertising for the largest residential development in Brooklyn, which resulted in having my photographs featured on the cover of The Real Deal and Brownstowner magazines.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
From my prior history of being a wedding photographer, this was an industry where my customers would allow me to have free reign over all decisions. I certainly had to unlearn this, as the real estate industry had much different expectations and desired end results. For example, some owners would provide shot/idea lists that of advertising images they wanted, but were not always possible (ex: a shot from the roof of the sun rising, however the sun rises on the other side, or a shot of the pool out of the window but the pool was blocked by trees). This provided many unique challenges that needed thoughtful work-around solutions.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my job is getting to getting see all parts of New York, not just NYC but upstate as well, in which most of these places I would not have gone to see if I was not photographing it. It is also great to meet all sort of new people and work with other creatives.
