We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Mahoney. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Being vulnerable and writing the songs that you will eventually play out is a huge risk for anyone. We’ve all found comfort in playing with friends, at home alone but when you are up there – especially in the very beginning – it’s a big effort…..
One of my musical brothers runs an Open Mic and when he introduces someone who is brand new he does it in a way that we all know to pay attention and add support. He’ll say: “Ok….give it up for ______ _____! It’s his first time here!” And when their 3 song set is over, I’ll go up to that performer and say “was that 2nd song one of yours? The Bm chord in the pre-chorus was perfect there!” And I mean it! And that just adds a little more support to someone who may be a little nervous. And then they come back!
People have done that to me and I remember it vividly.
When you see someone look over their burger, put down their beer, tap their foot to one of your originals…. risk was worth it…..

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been in a National magazine sampler (Relix) twice and listed on their Artists on the Rise, TV spots, FM Radio, guitar pick endorsements, Guitar Strap endorsements, Pedal endorsements, National Company selected a song for their hold music, Nashville, Tri-cities, NY venues, theaters, listening rooms, CD’s and just recently was a finalist in the World Songwriting Awards!
I play because I have to!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love the support and the camaraderie with singer-songwriters! It’s such a great community that I feel so humbled to be a part of! Very collaborative, very open, very welcoming!
I truly value & treasure what I have the pleasure to do!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Currently I am 50 people shy of 5,000 followers in Facebook! That has been a few years in the making and I think that after every show I get to know the audience by stopping by each table to thank them for coming out. I think people may not remember all the songs but they’ll remember how they felt while being there.
Plus I talk a lot so this just fits in perfectly! LOL!
I am very genuine in my appreciation for anyone staying to see me play and following me. I love it!
