We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Maher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking risks can be so scary. I was once told something that stayed with me in the best way possible. “Just keep moving towards it” That really helped me believe in myself even if I didn’t know exactly what I was doing. Sometimes the risk you’re taking is not even the scariest part. Just remember to always keep moving towards the goal.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kevin Maher. I’ve always been a performer at heart but was never encouraged to choose art over academics. Once I turned 18 I fully trusted my instincts to follow a path of being a professional dancer. I studied every style, trained with everyone I could and worked my butt off. I lived in NYC so this was tough. My weekly food budget was $20 total. I was. starting artist to say the least. I quickly realized that people will see your drive, hard work and dedication and reward it. I danced professionally for about 8 years before moving into choreography. I am so proud of my journey to get where I am today because it keeps me humble and grateful. I often visit my old struggle grounds in. NYC just to remind myself of where I came from. I was lucky enough to tour the world as a dancer with Mariah Carey, Eve, Missy Elliot and J.Lo. I was even featured in one of the biggest dance movies ever, You Got Served. The struggle paid off.I began teaching dance classes all over the world and slowly building my name as a choreographer. This time the struggle was different. It was a bout finding your voice, being patient and taking risks. My choreography career has been a wild ride ranging from everything to Dancing With The Stars to Madonna. I’ve been fortunate enough to Choreograph and Co-Creative Direct 10 world tours for New Kids on the Block. I am beyond grateful and proud of myself for hanging in there.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the idea in your mind come to life. So many times we just sit and listen to music with our eyes closed. We feel things. We see things. But every so often those things come to life. That feeling is the best. It doesn’t hurt if its on a stadium stage with a. major icon either.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There are so many signs telling us to pivot but they are often so hard to see. I’ve had to learn the same lessons over and over. when you finally do listen to your instincts and trust the universe you can see these signs so clearly. Its that moment when you grow as an artist.
