We recently connected with Kevin & Kyle Powless and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin & Kyle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Every October since 2018 we volunteer our time taking photos for a breast cancer support group called “It’s A Breast Thing.” It’s so rewarding for us to be able to give back to the community and help a great cause in any way we can. We started volunteering with this organization in our grandmas honor as she is a breast cancer survivor.. Every year we take photos of their models (Who either have breast cancer or are survivors of breast cancer) that will be added into a themed calendar for the upcoming year. We also volunteer to take their event photos. Giving back to this group has been one of the most rewarding projects we have been apart of.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We began in the art world in high school. Both Kevin and myself were very artistic and loved to draw, paint, you name it. After high school we attended Lansing Community College. We both took art classes, but feel out of love with it. We decided we still wanted to do something in the creative field and started in the photography program. We both feel in love with it and decided we wanted this to become something we get to do everyday. We began Powless Brothers Photography in 2012 and have been growing ever since. We both have taken different roles in the company as time has gone on and we’ve grow into the adults we are now. You’ll notice Kevin at most of the shoot taking photos while Kyle is behind the scenes doing the post processing of the images he takes. Kyle has moved away from Mason where the company is located and has started a second branch of the company where he lives on Gull Lake, near Kalamazoo, MI. We offer multiple services including, High school senior portraits, Wedding photography, Family Portraits, Christmas Mini Sessions, Aerial Photography and Videography.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part to us is being able to capture a moment in time that people can cherish for a lifetime. Being able to make memories come to life for others is something we appreciate ourselves and giving that back to our communities makes it all worth it for us.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One of the first things we did when we decided to go into business was start our Facebook business page. We would upload any new work we had done almost daily to keep viewers interested and noticing our brand. We would promote our page in the geo search area so others who we couldn’t reach could see us and follow us. It takes a lot to keep your name out in public but we’ve found by doing this that word of mouth seems to take over over time.
advice we would give to up and coming creatives is keep your audience looking at your work. don’t let it go dark or you will loose focus from people.
