We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Kramer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
I have worked for a number of individuals throughout my career. The few who have taken the time and made the effort to recognize and elevate me as the next potential leader because of my performance were the most influential. I have learned from each of my experiences as an employee in an effort to create my leadership template from what I respected and disliked about my bosses. Doing the job well deserves acknowledgment, with motivation to grow, and be promoted. Those who fail to meet expectations need nurturing and development, training, and an opportunity to correct the course. The greatest attestation of great leadership is to one day see those who reported to you become leaders of others and flourish.
Kevin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I had a stable and successful career in pharmaceuticals in sales, marketing, market access, and leadership over 20+ years. My life changed when my father presented my two brothers and me with a business idea to start the whole body cryotherapy industry in North America after experiencing the alternative wellness concept in Europe in 2010. As a team, the family founded US Cryotherapy, and the whole body cryotherapy industry, in Roseville CA in April of 2011 with the opening of our first treatment center. We have since treated over 4M people across 25 locations nationwide. We help people recover from injury, relieve chronic pain, reduce systemic inflammation, and improve stress, sleep, mood, and skin for millions of people. Our brand is thought of as the leader in alternative health and wellness. We hope more people will continue to seek systemic natural services to improve immune system function, reduce inflammation, and live healthier and younger. It is clearly vital in our post-pandemic experience.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I have constantly had to pivot over the last 10 years. Founding an industry, and all the obstacles that would come with that could never have been projected. We began a business in the US putting people into a freezing cold environment for a short duration to stimulate the body’s natural protection and repair responses. Needless to say, customers were not lining the doorways to get in. We had to educate, brand, develop protocols, hire and train expert technicians and add service modalities to enhance the wellness concept. The industry evolved around and from our brand, and we fought to protect our image and our elite position among imposters and far less safe equipment. It was not ideal nor predictable.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Having grown our brand and the industry, which many outside our organization have benefited from immensely, I would have been more strategic with the early modeling, implementation, and partnership with the modalities and manufacturers US Cryotherapy implemented and subsequently grew without the upside of their product growth in the industry at large. The founders of the retail services concept have been eclipsed by the product manufacturers and distributors, and I would have taken more of an interest in those verticals if I were given a redo.
