We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Kolk. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Alright, Kevin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have worked on a lot of music over the years but there are a few songs that I keep coming back to. my songs “red” and “Scared Of The Dark” talk a lot about my faith and how I want to live my life. Both of those songs were written so quickly and came to me really easily. I think I am most proud of those songs because they make me stop and think. I use to shy away from those topics but as I write more music in that space, it’s so freeing ask those hard questions and think deeply about that topic.
I remember playing those songs live for the first time and after the show had so many people come up to me and shared how those songs make them feel. It is powerful to hear something I wrote resonate with someone on a deep level. Thinking back on all the music that inspires me the most, Christian themes are always present even if they aren’t on the nose.
At the end of the day, writing about my faith in a unique way can help bridge the gap between secular music and Christian music like so many of my favorite artists do. My goal with my music is to make something that feels real and those songs do that really well.

Kevin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a songwriter, producer, and artists based out of Nashville. I was born in Wisconsin and grew up performing with my dad as a mascot for the Milwaukee Bucks and I think that gave me an itch to be on stage. After moving to Nashville I was constantly around music and started writing songs and learned how to produce music in high school. I remember seeing a video of Jon Bellion working in a studio and told myself “that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life.” I locked myself in my room any chance I could to learn how to produce music. YouTube became my best friend, I became obsessed.
From playing gigs in the mall with GAYLE to writers rounds at The Listening Room, I surrounded myself with music as much as I could.
When I was 16 I joined a boyband. When I was doing that I started learning my way around studios, playing real shows, and experiencing how the industry works whenever I wasn’t in school. When the boyband broke up I had full control over what I was doing and started releasing my own music as a songwriter, producer and artist.
I also was an athlete in high school and college and went to Belmont where I ran track and cross country while I studied music business. Met some of my favorite collaborators there, released even more music. I had the opportunity to develop as a writer and producer. Slowly I got better and got to work on some really cool songs and built my catalog.
After graduation in 2025, I have been writing and producing music for others and myself.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think a topic that comes up a lot when talking to other creatives is that nobody had a guidebook of how this process works. Everyone’s journey is going to look different and what works for me might not work for others and vise versa. It is easy to get lost or not know where to even start. Thinking about my journey so far, I still have no idea how I got where I did, it’s a lot of trial and error and some luck in the process.
My goal is to be as transparent about my process as I possibly can. I think it is easy to tell a story that doesn’t share the full story or that doesn’t get too complicated. I encourage my creative friends and fans of music to keep asking questions, keep being curious about how art is made and artist’s journeys because that connection is what makes music valuable.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Playing live is the most rewarding thing ever. I create music for a live experience. Everything I do is with the live aspect in mind. I think that is the performer in me. From being a mascot, to gigs as a kid, to boyband days, to finally doing my own artist project, it has defiantly changed over time. Learning how to do crowd work, get people’s attention, play with a band, etc.
Learning how to reward that process for my artistry as I grew up took some time and is something I am constantly trying to get better at but seeing it pay off when I am performing is the best part of what I do, hands down.
