We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevin Duncan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I believe that clean cars matter. A car to me is an investment that you care for thoroughly, so they last forever. There is no feeling like sitting in a new car. My mission is to give EACH of my customers that exact feeling every time they come to my shop, and I believe I’ve done exactly that since 2003.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kevin Duncan and I love detailing vehicles. When I was 10 years old my father and I washed cars in our driveway, we lived in Madisonville at that time. My father owned a 1974 Buick Centurian with a 454 engine, White top, white wide-walls, and dual exhaust. He taught me the importance of DETAIL. Every time we cleaned the car it looked and smelled brand new. The car was absolutely perfect from the paint–to the interior, and even under the hood. The end result always brought us so much joy, which is why I strive to produce the same results for my customers.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivot Q
A time I had to pivot in my career was the beginning of COVID. I resigned from Talbert House working as a site medical practice manager in 2018 and immediately started detailing full time. Working for a company at that time wasn’t worth it to me, and it was very easy for me to promote my business because my work spoke for itself. So the day I resigned I began handing out my business cards and the rest is history.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Sure, in 2003 I began to detail cars occasionally for my family and friends. 5 years later, while working as a route manager fulltime for G&K, I decided to detail part time on the weekends. I went from 30 customers to 1,000 in my career all by myself. The relationships that I have built by sticking to my mission has led me far and I’m grateful for every single one of my customers. When they come pick up their cars, the smile on their faces makes my day! And I will always strive for that result!
