We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin DelMastro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Kevin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I didn’t know I’d love playing music and performing like I do. Now I feel passionate about it and love spreading joy through my music. If I had known back then, I would’ve gotten into the profession much faster! I actually loved sports when I was a kid, and the part that I was most attracted to was the adrenaline rush of performing, in this case basketball, baseball, football, or tennis, in front of a crowd. When I played music as a kid, it was often in front of no one, and only my family could hear from the other room. It wasn’t exciting like sports. But now that I’ve found a niche of performing my music, I get a similar rush in front of crowds. I also enjoy hamming it up, but I can only do that once I have complete confidence in my ability to play the music well- that came later for me as well.

Kevin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I used to play saxophone in bands, but someone asked me to play solo at his party. He said my solos were epic and he wanted just me with some backing tracks. I enjoyed the experience, being in the spotlight, having a larger role as the only musician. My business grew to 100 shows a year, mostly weddings, birthdays, quinceaneras, anniversaries. I cover a variety of hit music, pop from yesterday and today, rock, Latin, and jazz. I work with clients to develop the ideal soundtrack, vibe, and energy for their event. I can make the show interactive with guests, playing right in the crowd, entertaining while I play my music, and also feel comfortable just playing in the background, if that is the client’s vision.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I love to be creative, come up with fresh takes on established hit pop songs. I have experimented with different sound systems and effects to enhance my sound when the client prefers. I also love learning new songs. Recently I was asked to learn a whole set of Rod Stewart and Arabic music. Learning new music stimulates my creativity, broadens my repertoire, and makes my clients call me again and again.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the pandemic I pivoted to play shows online. Honestly it was not as good as experiencing my music live, so I didn’t want to limit myself to livestreams. While everyone was locked down for the Covid quarantine, I was hired to play on the sidewalk for a proposal on a nearby apartment balcony. Hundreds of people streamed down from nearby condos to thank me with words, with tips, with requesting my business card. I’ve actually played for some folks that contacted me a year later. Pretty neat!
