We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Alright, Kevin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned how to produce by relentlessly studying the work of my peers. When I first moved to LA I lived with my friend who I’ve known since 5th grade who is a rapper and 2 other producers. There was literally never a time when there wasn’t music blasting in that house, I loved it. Knowing what I know now, I simply just wish I would’ve started earlier. At first I was reluctant to get into producing because everyone around me was already so advanced and skilled in their respective fields. But one day in 2015 it hit me like a ton of bricks while sitting alone in a studio, that producing was something I knew I could be great at and that I just needed to put the time and effort in. The skills that I think were most essential would have to be my patience and determination. I don’t know anyone other than my guy Zay Suav that CONSTANTLY works to perfect their craft like I do. I believe the only obstacle in my way so far in my journey has been me. I don’t like to blame other people or circumstances for my shortcomings. Because I started producing so late in my eyes, I felt that in order to kind of close the gap skill-wise between me and my peers I had to really kick into high gear and literally practice my craft every chance I got. In doing so I became a hermit crab, always choosing to stay in and work instead of going out to party or hang out. But I think all my hard work is paying off.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kevin Davis, professionally known as “WrldfamousKD”. As an ode to my late grandfather who used to always call me “World Famous Kevin” I decided that’s what I wanted the the world to know me as. I’m 29yo and I was born and raised in the south side of Chicago, IL. I got into producing because i absolutely adore music of course and the feeling a good song can give someone. The feeling is indescribable. I wanted to be able to make people feel good. That’s an impression you’ll never forget. I’ve never been the biggest talker or the best with words, I’m very much so a behind the scenes type of guy. So I knew production was for me. From the very beginning the most important thing to me was the feeling, I wanted people to be able to feel the emotion in the music I made since I could never accurately/fully express how I feel all the time. Given my circumstances, a quote that always stuck with me was “hard work beats talent any day of the week.” And that’s been one of the main ideas that’s fueled me. I thank God for blessing me with the discipline to keep going everytime I wanted to give up. I think what sets me apart from others is my genuine nature. In a world full of fake this and fake that I pride myself on really being who I say I am and having genuine connections with people, without the promise of gaining anything in return.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, it’s been the feelings I’ve been able to provide for people. I believe a good song has the power to heal. Also it’s been really cool for me to be able to see something that started out as a simple melody or as a random sound you heard walking down the street totally minding your business turn into a whole song or beat that can embody the exact feeling you had when you heard it for the first time.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m very traditional. I still want to do things like get married, start my own family and things of that nature. So for me, I’ll be happy just being able to provide a better life for my kids than I had. Not that I had a bad childhood or anything. I just want to be able to do more and want to be able to give my children different experiences. All the crazy accolades are cool but I’ve never been driven by materialistic things.
