We were lucky to catch up with Kevin Clone recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kevin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I started doing art and drawing from an earlier age. Something that most kids are interested in. But as i grew the curiosity never went away. I continue to take classes and learned alot. Later like everyone else i was on instagram and i was always a fan of taking pictures. And because of that a lady in South Carolina contacted me and for a last minute meeting and asked if i could be in some of her brand photos ti which i agree on. Soon i modeled for 3 other brands and i was in love with photos. I had a photographer but soon everything was closed due to covid so we wasn’t able to work together
. I have been a photographer since covid hit and i became interested in taking my own pictures because my photographer was under quarantine and from that i felt in love and soon friends and family members left and right. From that i have been able to fly to more than 10 state and shoot all type of events from business to commercial and more. And through my art i have been able to make a living and pay my bills and equipment. Its something i feel lucky about and i am forever grateful for the one that believes in me. My milestone was to shoot my bestfriend wedding and i did and that made it worth it to me
Kevin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who may not know me. I like to call myself indiana’s worst photographer. A nickname i named myself when i started in the industry because i believe in improving and working hard.
When i started i purchased a sony a7ll. It costed around $2000 and when it came it didn’t have a lens. So i asked my brother if he could buy the lens for me. He didnt have much but be did believe in my vision because he knew if i put my mind to anything i will accomplish it. From that i have been able to work with some of the biggest celebrities and go on many destinations and create amazing work for my clients and i am forever grateful. My one thing that i am know for is the sentiment “ feed your photographer “ because i believe that an empty stomach make things worst and a photographer need to be taken care of for the best possible results. I love what i do and i am glad i get to do this. I got in this industry by coincidence and i am glad i am here. The picture that i am most proud of tend to not impress people and the one that impressed people are the one that i dont think too much of. I love to work with people who are relaxed. If you love my work and have trust in what i do. You should have faith. In the future i want to work with people who wanna take risk and just create amazing work. I want them to come to me with ridiculous ideas and watch as i manifest those ideas to the big screen. Something that i would like my fans to know is i appreciate each one of them. Especially when they see me and come to say hi that do make my day. I am always learning and evolving so bear with me and be patient with me as i navigate through this.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
This is how i met kj. Early in my career i was very isolated and unwelcoming so people didnt really know what to make of me. But he took the chance and we worked a bit together and from that we realized what we have in common. So i gave him few advice and he took them and from that we realize we want the same things in life so we started to support each other. We both have issue with procrastination but when we are together thats not an issue because we can help each other and inspire each other. And i plan on working with him and achieve great things together
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
When it comes to clients. I find it that most of my clients they discover me from someone sharing my work on their page and they follow me and soon they trust my progress and book me for the service. I am happy that this is something i worked on and now i can predict and know what to post and what to expect.
